The underground caverns of the Copper Mine are cool with a year round temperature of about 9°C so please wrap up warm whatever the temperature above ground. Please also wear sensible footwear as the floor is wet and uneven in places with some loose stones. Caverns and tunnels have quite dim lighting and there are a few tunnels where you need to duck to walk through, each visitor is issued with a safety helmet to protect your head from any contact with the roof. How far do you have to walk? Sygun Coppermine is a self guided walking tour in which you visit three levels of the the old workings. These levels are reached via a series of staircases which take you up through the mountain. The tour concludes at the Victoria Level of the mine where you will follow the mountain path back to the visitor centre. The total distance is approximately 500 metres.

Sygun Copper Mine is a Victorian copper mine which closed in 1903 but was renovated and reopened by the Amies family as a tourist attraction in 1986, focusing on audio-visual tours of the underground workings. Sygun Copper Mine was once a main supplier of minerals in Wales. It is located about one mile (1.6 km) outside of the village of Beddgelert in the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales. The mine makes a great trip on either a rainy or scorching hot day, as the ambient temperature inside remains comfortably the same… for the walk from the exit of the mine you’d need your waterproofs! Some climbing of ladders is required…so I’d recommend no stilettos or flip flops for this one.

This is a great day out and gold panning for the children is one of the favourite things we have done over the years

Sygun Copper Mine was closed in 1903 but is now open again for you and yours to come and explore above and below ground! Self-guided audio visual tours allow you to explore the stunning caves and old workings on foot, in complete safety. There are winding tunnels and vast, colourful chambers, with magnificent stalactite and stalagmite formations and copper ore veins which contain traces of gold, silver and other precious metals. The Audio presentation with special lighting and sound effects offering an enjoyable, interesting and memorable glimpse into the lives of Victorian Copper Miners, so it's nicely educational as well as really interesting. Above ground activities include the Museum of Antiquities, Lake and Mountain Walks, a neat little adventure playground with bouncy castle, Panning for Gold, Pottery Painting and Metal Detecting, for some of which an additional fee may apply so get the kids to take their pocket money! There are no pushchairs permitted in the caves, nor back carriers, so be sure you give little legs forethought!
