Perfect location to see huge elk grazing close to the veiwing area. Bathrooms available.

Like any other wildlife, the elk have a mind of their own and come and go as they please. However, quite often large herds of elk can be seen grazing in this large grassland along highway 101 just north of Reedsport. They are not fond of the hot midday and more often can be seen in the earlier hours or toward the end of the day. The viewing area has a parking lot and benches, where visitors can sit and watch the elk graze or simply resting in the field. The herds consist mostly of female cows and younger elk; however, large magestic bulls with magnificent antlers are often seen watching over the herd. They are a magnificent sight!

If you've never seen elk in the wild, this is the place to do it. It's free of charge, not crowded, and offers a view of these majestic creatures against a gorgeous backdrop, with the serene Umpqua River behind you. Enjoy the beauty of seeing elk in their natural habitat. In our experience, it is best to go around sunset. It's about a 20 minute drive from Lakeside.
