The Sinjska alka is an equestrian competition held in the Croatian town of Sinj every Sunday in August since 1717. The people of Sinj believe that the Lady of Sinj miraculously drove away Ottomans, thus helping them to defend their town. If you are around this time, we highly recommend getting a ticket for this ceremony.

SINJSKA ALKA is held in the Croatian town of Sinj every first Sunday in August since 1715. It commemorates a Croatian–Venetian victory in the Ottoman–Venetian war on August 14, 1715 in which the local population of around 700 Croats in cooperation with a smaller number of Venetians managed to defend Sinj against 60,000 Ottoman soldiers. Immediately after the magnificent and glorious victory the people of the Cetina region founded Sinjska alka- a competition in which horsemen riding at full gallop aim their lances at a hanging metal ring (alka) and points are awarded according to the part of the ring they are able to pierce. The game has become an eternal memory of the heroism of the ancestors and the bearer of national pride. In 2010, the Alka was inscribed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists.
