Lovely walk around this 13th century priory. Perfect if you want to see some history.

Ruined Priory by the river, lovely riverside walks. Not really worth going inside the ruins and cafe is pretty dire, but really atmospheric place to walk, cross river on interesting wooden bridge, see sandstone cliffs, woodland. Have to have a car to get there, and pay small charge for parking, otherwise free.

Wonderful atmospheric ruins of the Abbey by the River Wear at Finchale (pronounced finkle) just outside Durham. The Abbey was a victim of the greatest act of cultural vandalism in history - Henry Vlll's dissolution of the monasteries.

On the banks of the River Wear, in a beautiful wooded setting, stand the extensive remains of Finchale Priory. It was founded in 1196 on the site of the hermitage of St Godric, a retired sailor and merchant, who settled here after a life of adventure and travel. The priory was an outpost of Durham Cathedral and functioned as a holiday retreat for the monks of Durham until its suppression in 1538. The story of Finchale can be read in its surviving remains, from St Godric's original church and tomb through the 13th century priory and its later rebuilding.
