The city was designed in 1496 by the brothers Cristóbal and Bartolomé Colón; It was founded in 1502 by Fray Nicolás de Ovando. In its first stage of the Spanish Colony, it was considered the main maritime and commercial port of the island. It is the second place in importance as a tourist destination in the country.
