NC's most visited state park includes a 19th century Civil War fort, recreation area with lifeguard-protected swimming, bathhouse and picnic area. This is a place I personally take all of my out of town guests. It makes the best day trip- It's fabulous....and free! :) Address: 2303 E Fort Macon Rd, Atlantic Beach, NC 28512

A fascinating historic site with 3 miles of trails to walk or run. The trails are sandy/rocky. Closed toed shoes or sturdy sandals are recommended. The first two thirds is pretty well shaded, and the last third is in the sun.

Historic Ft Macon park is a great piece of history located on the opposite end of the island from the point.
