the Monkey Dance or the Kecak is a fairly recent addition to the balinese dance as it was only made in 1930. the monkey dance was lifted from the Ramayana wherein more than 100 half-naked male performers shout ka chak in unison and there are no accompanying instruments here, only the voices of the Kecak dancers and the voices of the characters like Vanara, Rama, Laksamana and more. Kecak is a combination of dance and drama, the Kecak dance depicts the Hindu epic, “Ramayana,” that tells the story of Prince Rama, who with the help of the monkey-like Vanara defeats the evil King Ravana to rescue his Princess Sita. Kecak also has roots in Sanghyang, a sacred ritual based on the idea that during the performance, hyangs, or spiritual entities will enter and possess the bodies of the dancers. The Kecak Dance is performed nightly from 6:30 to 7:30 in areas of Ubud, Batubulan Village in Sukawati and at Uluwatu Temple in Uluwatu South Bali. price of admission of a Kecak Dance is about 100,000 Rupiah Per Person.

Kecak dance (usually a fire dance) is vibrant and involves a lot of loud music provided by a group of men with musical instruments and “chanting”. The dancers are usually bare-chested and only clothed with a cloth around their waists. During the dance, a fire will be set in the centre of the stage and dancers will dance vigorously with the ryhthm. The dance usually depicts the story of Ramayana, one of Hindu’s epic tales.
