The most dazzling Bavarian, King Ludwig II, left comparatively little traces in Munich, but insane buildings all over the country that brought the country close to state bankruptcy and possibly Ludwig to his death. Thanks to Walt Disney, Neuschwanstein Castle becomes the epitome of a fairytale castle, Herrenchiemsee Castle looks like a wonderful film set on the island and the dazzling Schachenhaus is high up in the mountains near the Zugspitze, but can only be reached in a one-day mountain tour. And again, incidentally, this king, with his building rage, ensured that many remote corners were well developed, but unintentionally: he wanted the people to never enter his possessions.

König Ludwig Sommerhaus Muß man gesehn haben. Superschön. Ich brauche 4 Std bis dahin zu Fuß. Aber geübte schaffen das schneller.

Das Schachenschloss wurde auf den Wunsch von König Ludwig II. nach Plänen von Georg Dollmann in den Jahren von 1869-1872 auf der Schachenalpe errichtet. Hier verbrachte König Ludwig II. mehrmals seinen Geburts- und Namenstag, am 25. August. Daher werden auch heute noch an jedem 25.08. die Ludwigfeuer insbesondere auf dem Schachen entzündet. In den letzten Jahren erfolgte eine umfangreiche und aufwendige Restaurierung des Schachenschlosses.
