Part of the Saskatchewan River Crossing area, the Howse Pass viewpoint shows you where the three rivers of the Saskatchewan, Mistaya and Howse meet to form the North Saskatchewan River. A nice stop over on the Icefield Parkway as the Crossing is the only place to refuel your vehicle between Jasper and Lake Louise village. It is also a place of historical significance as it was named "The Crossing", when travellers and fur traders used this spot to cross the North Saskatchewan River on their way to British Columbia in the 19th century.

One of the most stunning hikes anyone can do in the Rockies. About a 1 hour drive from our cabin, Lake O'Hara is a jaw dropping place with sparkling blue lakes and breathtaking vistas. Allow a full day to complete the Alpine Circuit hike as it is a 11.1km loop with very steep terrain in parts and loose scree in some areas . It took us 4 years of trying to finally get a seat on these extremely difficult tickets to obtain. ** UPDATE**: As of 2023, tickets for the shuttle are only obtainable via a lottery system via Park Canada's website. You can hike up the extra 11km fireroad to the lake or get a camp permit if you choose to overnight there. This is by far our favourite hike in the Canadian Rockies, and there are many!!

Trans-Canada Highway
The Burgess Shale is a guided hike only organised through the Burgess Shale Geoscience Foundation as the area is restricted and monitored being a UNESCO world heritage site for one of the best hard & soft body parts fossil preservation of Cambrian marine animals from over 500 million years ago. An hour drive from our place to the meeting point for the hike to the Walcott Quarry (The Burgess Shale), it is a 21km out and back strenuous day hike with 1166m/3825ft elevation gain, so not for the faint hearted. Karen and I were the only one on this hike on that day with our Geophysicist guide as the other party never showed up. A fantastic hike if you are interested in fossils and has some incredible vistas on the way up.
A one hour drive to Lake Louise from our cabin where this hike starts. You will discover a high mountain treasure chest with a collection of impressive peaks and glaciers. It is a difficult 20km day hike with some steep sections, scramble bits and lots of switchbacks if you decide (as we did) to do the highline trail section to the Beehive and back down via Lake Agnes. From the Lake Louise shoreline path continue on the signed trail to the Tea House. From there you can push on a few hundred metres on loose scree slopes to the observation point of the Victoria Glacier. On your way back, take the signed highline trail steep section to the Beehive for some awesome views above Lake Louise. From there, follow the path to Lake Agnes and its Tea house and back down to Lake Louise.
