Sightseeing

Travel between the I-70 interstate and Delta Colorado on this scenic byway. Explore the Plateau Creek roadway on the north end of the byway. Rafting with small inflatables is possible during spring runoff, with an easy 8 mile stretch to the confluence of the Colorado River. Life jackets and wetsuits are needed. Visit the towns of Mesa and Colbran. While in Colbran, you can visit Vega State Park for fishing, boating and hiking. As you travel up the Mesa in elevation, you’ll pass Powderhorn Ski Resort. Powderhorn is one of Colorados most affordable ski resorts and also some of the best snow in recent years. A new high speed lift gives quick access to the mountain top in winter, summer and autumn. Next, at the highest elevation points you’ll find lodges and the national forest visitor center. There are a few restaurants in the area. Camping, fishing, boating and hiking are all enjoyed in the warmer months. In winter, Nordic skiing is provided free of charge to visitors at 3 areas (Skyway, County Line, Ward Lake). Snowmobiling is easy to access from the Mesa Top trailhead nearby. In the summer, the beginning of the Palisade Plunge mountain bike trail is nearby. On the south side of the byway, after the visitor center, travelers will find the town of Cederedge. Known for their apples, a festival is held each fall. A local golf course is both fun and challenging in town. At the end of the byway you can turn west to arrive at Delta, a town known for murals and agriculture. A turn east will point you towards McClure Pass and the towns of Paonia and Hotchkiss.
