We are about one hour from Maine's beautiful beaches, including our personal favorite, Crescent Beach! There are a number of different beach options here if you explore the paths through the woods. We can usually find a nice quiet spot to ourselves where the sand is soft and the ocean is easy to enter and exit. Crescent Beach State Park is a classic saltwater beach park with beach grass-studded sand dunes, ocean breezes, herring gulls, picnic areas and views of fishing boats and an offshore island. The park's signature feature and namesake is a mile-long, crescent-shaped beach ideal for strolling and sunbathing, where relatevely warm waters and light surf make swimming and boating a pleasure. A few feet from the crowded summer sands are trails for walking and nature watching. In the off-season when the park is closed to vehicles, walkers are welcome to enjoy the tranquility of the beaches and trails. In the winter, visitors can hike or cross-country ski on paths under a canopy of snow-covered evergreen boughs.

The Saco River is a great easy river for a relaxing float, we are nearby drop-in/take-out spots. The Saco is a popular recreational river, drawing an estimated 3,000 to 7,000 people per summer weekend, mostly on the stretch from Swan's Falls (a campground formerly maintained by the Appalachian Mountain Club and now maintained by the Saco River Recreation Council), to Brownfield, Maine. There are many sand beaches along the Saco when not at flood stage. The Saco is a major attraction for canoeists. One area of the river, Walker's Rip, is a set of rapids that has caused less talented canoers to capsize, although it can be navigated successfully. Several canoeing rentals are available throughout the river's distance. The Saco River is also famous for sport fishing, even though the number of fish in it has decreased tremendously throughout time.

Hiking

Super quick 5 minute drive and one of our personal favorite hikes in the area. It has quick or long hiking trail options. Douglas mountain is a great hike with stunning views of the White mountains from atop a stone tower built in the 1920's. Douglas Mountain offers a a network of short but challenging trails that lead up to a stone observation tower with expansive views of the Maine Lake Region. The preserve has a rich history and was donated to the Town of Sebago from the Maine Chapter of The Nature Conservancy.

The Sawyer Mountain Trails are less then a 20 minute drive from our Airbnb. With some peaks over 1,000 feet, these are the highest elevations in Maine south of the Saco River and comprise a large block of undeveloped land. The Francis Small Heritage Trust, Inc. preserves about 1,400 acres. The property offers good views from the summit of Sawyer Mountain and gives access to other summits, small gorges, brooks, cascades, ponds, and wetlands. As historical points of interest it includes Estes Cemetery and the old Sawyer and Ebenezer Walker homesteads of which only the foundations remain. Moose, deer, beaver, mink, and raccoon frequent the area. The land is open for hiking, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling on existing trails, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and horseback riding. Both on-trail and off-trail exploration of the area is encouraged. Whenever traveling off-trail (and even on-trail), be sure to bring a compass and a good map and know how to use them. Trail maps are usually available at both the western trailhead in Limerick and the eastern access in Limington. In addition to these official trailheads, visitors may also park along Shaving Hill Road in order to access the property from the south.

This mountain is just under 30 minutes from us! One of our favorite hikes for it's great variety of trails and stunning views of the white mountains at the top! We especially enjoy bringing a blanket, lunch and binoculars to the summit as it is usually warm and PLEASANT during the summer. At 2,006 ft, Pleasant Mountain is the tallest mountain in southern Maine and one of the defining landmarks of the Sebago Lake region. The mountain is a destination for hikers, birdwatchers, snowmobilers, hunters, snowshoers and skiers. Ledges Trail (1.8 miles): This blue-blazed trail, provides another access from Mountain Road to the primary summit of Pleasant Mountain offering scenic overlooks along the way. Elevation gain is 1,600 feet and the parking area is adjacent to fire lane 54. Fire Warden’s Trail (2.3 miles): This trail provides access to Pleasant Mountain's summit from the northwest via Wilton Warrent Road and is used by snowmobiles in the winter. Trail is blazed with red and has a 1,500 foot elevation gain. Southwest Ridge Trail (2.7 miles): This trail provides access to Pleasant Mountain's southwest and primary summits via the Denmark Road. The trail is blazed with yellow with rock cairns. Bald Peak Trail (2.4 miles): This blue-blazed trail is accessed from Mountain Road and has a 1,900 foot elevation gain. This mountain is a 35 minute drive from the front door of our Airbnb. Hawk Mountain (1047 ft to 1070 ft, depending on who you trust) is a small mountain in Waterford, Maine, with sweeping views of the Lakes Region and Oxford Hills. Maps and information are available at the Western Foothills Land Trust website. Trails at the Hatch Preserve at Hawk Mountain are open year-round for hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The parking area on Hawk Mountain Road is well-maintained, and a kiosk contains a small map, walking sticks to borrow, and reminders to carry out what you have carried in. Past the main parking area/kiosk, there is a small parking area with a few spots next to an ATV trail intersection, with a town of Waterford parks sign. Beware during spring mud season of the short drive on Hawk Mountain Road between the parking areas, which is extraordinarily muddy, and requires four-wheel drive. "The trails are not well-marked (the website delicately described the preserve as a little “wounded”), but I summited and enjoyed the views via an ungainly, but very easy, 1.9 mile loop using what I believed to be the Europe and Cyrus trails, taking about 45 minutes. The fastest way to the top is an approximately 1.4 mile out and back."

Sofia's is our go-to place for grabbing sandwiches when we are headed out on a motorcycle ride, hiking to a mountaintop for lunch or going out canoeing on the lake. The food is delicious, the portions are large and the sandwiches are packed full of fresh ingredients and great flavors. They even have a drive-through window which makes stopping to grab a meal on the go REALLY easy and convenient. Sofia’s first started out as Dall’s Drive-In Diner back in the 1950’s. Which became a Cornish landmark. The store was eventually purchased in 2000 by a Greek man from Crete. He named the store after his mother. Hence the name Sofia.

This place is located IN PORTLAND, 1 hour from our Airbnb. We absolutely love this place and had to add it to our guide as it is in our TOP3 places to eat in Portland, Maine. The food is spectacular, the flavors are amazing and the atmosphere is unique and inviting. We always order ramen bowls, they are all delicious but we especially enjoy the pork belly. The pork buns are also fantastic, amazing texture, so rich and decadent. We pretty much always order the cucumber mint drink on their drink menu as well, they are refreshing and have tons of flavor that goes perfectly with the meal. Lastly worth noting is their house salad with miso dressing which helps ensure there are leftovers and is always very well made. "Refined ramen & soba noodle soups plus yakitori skewers & sake served in a sleek yet warm nook."
