Neighbourhoods

Our suburb is dominated by water and the presence of Peter Jackson’s movie empire - Weta. He has four businesses all based here: Weta Digital that does special effects, Weta Workshop that does props and sets like you see on Lord of the Rings, Park Rd Productions that does editing, and Stone St Studios that has the biggest green screen in the Southern Hemisphere. You can take a tour of Weta Workshop and buy Lord of the Rings related stuff, it’s pretty cool! There are also several great cafes in the area. Larder has great coffee and food, as does Polo. Chocolate Fish in Shelley Bay has the best fish sandwhich you’ll ever eat, and a great harbour view, perfect for a sunny day. One of the other things we love to do is drive around the edge of the peninsula- you can do a circle up pst Shelley Bay, around to Karaka Bay and Seatoun, over the hill and down into Breaker Bay and then back through the airport. It’s amazing to me how wild some of the coast is, just 10 minutes drive from the centre of the country’s capital. And if you feel like a walk, there’s a great short walk at the end of Bowes St on a strathmore with a view of the South Island on a clear day, and other walking tracks around the place. My husband reminded me - poke you head into Roxy Cinema. Peter Jackson and his wife Fran Walsh did this place up in Art Deco style and it’s really something, particularly the ceiling upstairs. And stay and watch a movie if you’re in the mood!

Sightseeing

Great lookout with an amazing view of the city. Also a great way to see the fault lines that go through the city! If there’s an earthquake that knocks you off your feet or goes for a long time, get to high ground! And we have water, food and camping supplies at our place.

Touristy but fun! Takes you from Lambton Quay (a good shopping street) up to the top of the Botanic Gardens, great views and you can walk back down stopping at the Rose Garden for a bite to eat on the way.

Good for a bad weather day, lots of interesting exhibits, and a good cafe. Right on the waterfront too if you fancy a stroll.

About a half an hour drive, you can visit the base of one of the turbines, and see fantastic views. I helped design this wind farm (I’m an engineer) so I’m quite proud of it! New Zealand is one of the windiest places in the world, we had to buy wind turbines specifically designed for the high winds at this site!
