Sightseeing

Remember that movie River Wild with Meryl Streep and that other movie, The Revenant with Leonardo DiCaprio? Kootenai Falls had a starring role in both of them! Kootenai Falls is the largest undammed falls in Montana and it's a super easy hike (more like walk) from the parking lot. After gazing on the falls, you can take a short walk down to the Swinging Bridge and dare yourself to cross the mighty Kootenai (advice: don't look down and walk quickly).

Ross Creek Cedars is a 100-acre scenic area that is home to a grove of giant, ancient western red cedars. The loop through the grove is about a mile and it is flat. On your way back down from Ross Creek, you'll be treated to an amazing view of the Cabinet Mountains.

Yaak Falls, and the campground just below the falls, is a favorite spot for our family. We recommend stopping and viewing the Yaak Falls on your trip through the Yaak (maybe on your way to visit the Yaak Tavern?). If you're hot, we recommend pulling into the Yaak Falls Campground to swim at one of the locals' favorite swim holes.

Roosevelt Park, Troy's crown jewel, is located along the Kootenai River in Troy. The park has got it going on! It has a boat launch, picnic area, soccer field, baseball field, children’s fishing pond, walking path, basketball court, playground, bathrooms, water play area, skate park, and a rentable yurt! The water play area, fishing pond, and playground are excellent activity options for little ones.

Swimming hole

Bull Lake is one of the go-to lakes in the area for swimming, boating, paddle boarding, and fishing. The lake is about 5-miles long and has beautiful views of the mountains. In August, we've heard the water temperature comes up to 70-75 degrees, which is the perfect swim temperature when it's really hot outside. We recommend taking a dip in Bull Lake at the Dorr Skeels Campground. The campground has a small beach and a buoyed-off swim area. It can be the perfect detour on your way to visit Ross Creek Cedars and/or the Halfway House. There are other great lakes in the area, but this one is the easiest to access.

Hiking

For those who are looking for a more strenuous hike, we highly recommend Leigh Lake. Leigh Lake is on the on the other side of Libby, but it is well worth the drive. Leigh Lake Trail is a short, but steep hike (~3 miles roundtrip). This hike checks all the amazing-hike boxes: multiple water features (water fall! mountain lake!), wild flowers, mountain views, and animal views (mountain goats!).

Troy has a pretty nice disc golf course called Timber Beast. It's in town and in a shady grove of trees along the Callahan Creek. Pretty dang nice summertime recreational opportunity if you ask us.

Driving in Rural, Wilderness Areas - Be Cautious!

As with most rural wilderness areas, please be cautious and aware when driving. Large wildlife (e.g., deer, moose, elk) are often present on the roads and are difficult to see during twilight hours.
