Food Scene

The best thing about the current trend of restaurants specialising in just one or two hero items is that those dishes and drinks are explored, dissected and reconstructed with ingenuity and passion. So then to Chick ‘n Sours, where the focus is fried chicken and sour cocktails. Restaurant renegade Carl Clarke has settled for a permanent pop up, and after trying their fare, you’ll be delighted that Chick ‘n Sours is here to stay. The chicken is free range from the Pilmoor farm, and produce is largely organic. A minimal but appealing menu contains delights such as Korean fried thigh with gochujang mayo and chilli vinegar, or pickled watermelon with peanut and coriander.

Fancy flavours in a warm and homely atmosphere, this unassuming East London spot serves up a truly incredible selection of dishes. Named after the Roman road connecting key Italian cities in the ‘Food Valley’, we recommend you try their signature ‘gnocci fritto’ out for size. Renowned for their produce, Via Emilia by Food Roots is a must for an authentic taste of Italy.

Compared to all the other pizza places in town, they do things a little differently at Radio Alice; the toppings are put on after the base is cooked, because they believe this keeps the ingredients at their most flavourful. It does showcase the quality of the dough, and the various topping combinations include some of Italy’s best produce. With an open kitchen and lively dining area, it’s got a great atmosphere, too.

Sitting on the corner of Hoxton Square, Petit Pois serves up classic French fare. Moules mariniere, steak frites with bernaise, duck confit, chocolate mousse served from a huge mixing bowl at the table – it’s simple food cooked and served with confidence. Petit Pois also does its own take on Sunday lunch – a big pie and an entire bowl of that mousse. Très, très bien.

This temple of burgers, dogs and fries has become a Hoxton staple, and with good reason. From their hot sauce-covered Monkey Fingers to their chili cheese fries, it’s down and dirty American comfort food. Their burgers are amongst the best in London – the Dead Hippie with mustard fried patties and secret sauce takes some beating.

You’ll have no trouble finding authentic and tasty Vietnamese food on Kingsland Road (shoutout to the pho at Song Que Café), but Mien Tay is one place that stands out. It may be no-frills in terms of décor, but rest assured all the effort has gone into the food, and you certainly get good value for money. Mien Tay specialises in cuisine from the south west of Vietnam. Their whole, deep-fried sea bass and the seafood hotpot are real winners.

With a rotating selection of craft beer, both on tap and in the fridge, including lots of local brews, you won’t be going thirsty at Howl At The Moon. There’s classic pub grub on offer – burgers, sandwiches and roasts on Sundays – but the chill atmosphere is really what makes this place. No one takes themselves too seriously; it’s all about good beer, good food and having a good time.

Drinks & Nightlife

This three-floor spot in an old police station at the bottom of Kingsland Road really is a one-stop shop when it comes to booze. At TT Liquor, you can enjoy a range of cocktail making classes and liquor tastings, held in what used to be jail cells; you can even stash bottles in deposit boxes to enjoy on your next visit. In the cellar bar, the menu is divided up into four eras, so you can drink your way through cocktail history. If you’re still thirsty after all that, you can pick up a tipple from the liquor store, which is over a thousand spirits strong.

Like many great bars, Happiness Forgets is hidden in a basement. This, combined with low lighting and dark wood, gives it a real sense of intimacy, so it’s a great one for date night. The drinks list changes frequently, but the bartenders here definitely know their stuff; you’ll have no problem finding a cocktail that suits you. And anywhere that advertises using the tag, “great cocktails, no wallies,” is our kind of place.
