Parks & Nature

Eco-friendly adventure spot in the middle of the tropical rainforest offering ziplining and waterfall rappelling as well as beautiful hiking trails with a vast quantity of flora, fauna and birds to see. A rustic restaurant is also on site. A walk through the jungle has so many little things to see; leafcutter ants making their way across the trails in long heavy lines, orchids growing out from the tree trunks and huge termite nests are a few of the things that amazed me as well as many others. Just the effort made to keep the jungle growth from encroaching on this spot is incredible to see. A long ride in on a dirt road where the going is rough.

Cosckscomb is a tropical forest reserve of 150 square miles and made into a jaguar preserve in 1986. There are many animals to see there in its extensive trail network like the peccary, howler monkey, agouti, gibnut, coatimundi and about 300 species of birds. Trails are clearly marked and are for beginners or experienced hikers, including those who want to hike to Victoria Peak (a 4 day hike only for the best among us!) Waterfalls, swimming areas and tubing down the river are extra special in this beautiful area. Inner tubes can be rented at the entrance. The hope of seeing a jaguar is in most of us who go there but the elusive jaguar is rarely spotted, although sometimes you can see tracks or scat in muddy areas.

Food scene

Good food, music and bar. A hoppin' place to be with American BBQ items and more. Great brisket and fish tacos even according to Belizeans (who really get BBQ). Friendly atmosphere with outside tables for sitting. Have a Jalapeno Marguerita!

Sightseeing

Mayan Chocolate Factory- Take a shuttle from CR or for the more adventurous, one can even take a local bus to Maya Center Village, where the cacao farm is located. On arrival, there is a short walk to the Farm via an unpaved roadway and arrival at a palapa where the tour begins. Host presents a lovely informational and hands on learning experience and then talks about the many , many varieties of cacao fruit that grow on the farm and their organic farming techniques. He is very knowledgeable and patient to answer any and all questions about the farming- planting, growing, harvesting methods, pitfalls, of the cacao, and how the cacao goes from plant to processing. Ample time is given to take photos, ask questions, look at the various samples of cacao fruit, etc. His portion of the tour ends there. Then one returns to the building where the processing part of the tour continues. We had another host present information and demonstrate how the cacao beans are processed and made into nibs and using the traditional MATATE- or grinding stone, the same for a thousand years of culture, to grind the nibs into a liquid paste consisting of the cacao rich in cacao oil. One can participate by sampling the beans, the nibs, and by trying one's hand at grinding using the traditional MATATE grinding stone. I was fascinated when I later visited some southern Mayan ruins to see that , among the archeological artifacts of the ruins, had been found the same tools I had used. It is made of a basalt volcanic rock. The process is grinding the nibs until they become a smooth cacao paste which contains lots of cacao oil and then adding some sugar and /or other spices at this time. The liquid is then poured into candy molds to create dark chocolate bars. The molds are chilled to allow the dark chocolate to harden and then one can sample the candy one has made. Additional bars of different flavors and percentages of cacao can be purchased along with cacao butter, which is the solidified cacao oil, along with cacao teas, beans, nibs, and other mayan handicrafts from the gift shop. A wonderful informative and relaxing tour for all ages. Bug spray recommended as this is an inland adventure.
