Excellent American Cuisine with French touches blended with fresh island ingredients. Menu changes periodically to keep things fresh and the wine selection is excellent. During lunch it's a great place for a deli meal.

How can you come to the islands and NOT have some shaved ice (aka snow cone). Another place to go without leaving Kailua town, a refreshing shaved ice with tons of sweet island flavors to choose from like passionfruit or guava. Make sure to get it local style with ice-cream and azuki beans (Japanese sweet red bean). Also great spot for local Kailua surfwear clothing.

The perfect place for the healthy "lunch plate". Excellent blends of island food and cultures with choices to make your meals like macadamia crusted Ahi and BBQ chicken healthier with brown rice and tossed greens. Perfect for grab and go to bring to the beach or to take on your drive around the island. The fresh island fish is always good there!

Because there's almost nothing more authentic in terms of traditional Hawaiian food. Nestled at the edge of the sacred and historic Waiahole Valley, the old Poi Factory stands by the side of the highway offering amazing traditional foods like Laulau, Pipikaula, Kalua Pork, Poke and of course the native island staple - Poi. They also offer refreshingly sweet Mamake Tea and Haupia (coconut pudding) for dessert or to quench your thirst. The market right next door offers native made apparels and home goods to bring home made in the islands.

Local favorites with a bit of flare. The Custard French toast is outer worldly and worth the wait. The Kalua (smoke roasted) Pig Hash is amazing. My personal favorite is the Brunch Bowl. The combination of flavors are unique and who can turn down a Mimosa as part of your morning vacation breakfast?

Drinks & Nightlife

The icon of Kailua, it's been serving Tiki drinks and Surf & Turf since before I was born. Friendly staff and a huge array of drinks to choose from. It's a must visit while in Kailua.

Parks & Nature

I grew up going up here as a kid for a nice short hike in our beautiful rainforests with a rewardingly cold dip in icy mountain waters with a view of the waterfalls. Go during the weekday as it will be less traveled but locals and tourists alike.

The quintessential beach seen world wide to represent Kailua and our way of life. Powder white sand beaches with some spots with waves (northern end) for surfing sports. It's a great place to go swimming, kite and wind surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and even surfing out at Pōpō'ia - flat island, which is a bird sanctuary.

A spectacular view of the windward side from Chinaman's Hat (northeast) to Makapu'u Lighthouse (southeast). This is the historic battle place of the mō'ī (king) of O'ahu, Kalanikūpule vs. the invading mō'ī of Hawai'i, Kamehameha where thousands met their end off the cliffs there.

The best place to welcome ka Lā (the sun) in the morning. A short hike to the pillboxes left from World War II. The trail starts off steep and tapers off. Make sure you're dressed appropriately with the right hiking shoes and clothing. Layers best pending on how windy it can be. It can get cold. Not recommended when raining and muddy. Very slippery at the start.

Amazing views of the eastern side of the island from this spot. You can see whales breeching during their migratory travels. For the ADVANCED hiker, find the break-off trail to the tidal pools off the cliffs below. If the surf conditions are calm, you can also hike along the cliff side at the bottom around to Ka Iwi Park.

A larger powder white sand beach with less tourist traffic than Kailua's Lanikai Beach during the weekdays and weekends. Some spots of the beach have waves and small surf so one should be careful if not a strong swimmer. Get a lunch to go from Keneke's or bring it over from Kailua.

Essentials

Supporting local farms and local products, Foodland is the best place for all local products (yes better than your Whole Foods). It also has the best poke in Kailua town for being a grocery store. Adjacent to it is R.W. Fields which is a purveyor of fine food products, cheeses, pate, wines, and liquors, my personal favorite stop in.
