Le Monument de La Renaissance - The project was launched by former Senegalese president Abdoulaye Wade who considered it part of Senegal's prestige projects, aimed at providing monuments to herald a new era of African Renaissance. The monument was designed by a Senegalese architect but built by a North Korean company and cost a pretty penny, making it a little controversial among the Senegalese population, but just a 5 minute walk from the appartment, you can't leave Dakar without checking it out! You can also catch a glimpse from the rooftop of the building.

A beautiful, colourful island with bright flowers and quirky architecture, one of my favourite spots in Dakar! A lovely place to swim, to surf (for more experienced surfers), scuba dive or simply explore the island on foot (there are no cars), or loung on the beach. It's just cfa 500 for the pirogue which will take you there in about 15 minutes and pirogues are regular.

This island is a must see for anyone visiting and wanting to understand more about the history Senegal. You can catch a ferry from the port downtown. Just search 'chaloupe gorée Dakar' for the timetable and pricing. There are also plenty of great restaurants right next to the port on the island to enjoy tieboudienne and many other classic Senegalese dishes. Don't forget your ID! You'll need it to catch the chaloupe

Lac Rose or Lake Retba is beautiful; much like the rest of Senegal! The best time of the day to go is the early afternoon, when the lake has had enough time to warm up (this maximises the chance that the lake will have its famous pink appearance). It is listed among world's 10 most amazing lakes. It's Dunaliella salina algae, that produces the red pigment and paints the water into lovely colours. The most intense colours can be seen in the drier period—from November to June. There is also an option to go horse riding close to the lake, around the sand dunes and even gallop through the waves along the beach! Just ask me for the phone number to book.

A great national park with giraffes, rhinos, zebras and many other beautiful animals. You can either take a guide or take your own car. They also have a great restaurant where you can get a good look at the crocodiles, but be careful of the monkeys that may have their eyes on your lunch! :)

A magical place to spend the night in the stunning Sine Saloum delta, you can gaze at the stars and sleep in a baobab tree! They have excellent food and you can use this as a base from which to organise day trips like kayaking through the creeks and mangroves of the delta.

Soumbédioune is a good place for souvenirs, but go on a day when you have lots of energy and you feel ready to barter! Also directly opposite the market, is a Touareg jeweller that makes stunning Touareg jewlery at a reasonable price. Ahmed is also one of the most cheerful people I have ever met :)
