The Apiary, Widecombe in the Moor

Sightseeing

A Bronze Age settlement where you can still see the remains of 24 stone roundhouses, within a massive boundary wall about 150 metres in diameter. You can walk the 3.4 miles to the site from The Apiary, with only the first 200 metres on the road. The rest of the route, you follow the ridge of Hameldown which gives you a 360 degree view of the moor, and on a clear day, you can see right out to the sea.

There are so many stunning circular walks from the house around these rocks - they're the ones you can see in the distance. Hopefully the Widecombe Walks book is still at The Apiary when you arrive, if not look up on the Dartmoor website

If you don't mind sharing your wild swimming spot with a few people, then this is the easiest one to head to. 10-15 minutes drive from the house, enough depth that you can swim a good 100m and huge rocks for jumping in off.

Italian-inspired Osteria, founders of Duck Soup in Soho and Little Duck Picklery in Dalston have opened in Ashburton. ‘A tiny kitchen, one large table’ succinctly sums up the approach. Homemade charcuterie, natural wines, enviable interiors & genuine, open-hearted hospitality

Neighbourhoods

The Apiary is situated 10 minutes walk from Widecombe in the Moor. recently named by The Times as one of the most up and coming places to live, which will seem all the more bizare when you come to visit this beautiful and peaceful town set within Dartmoor National Park. Widecombe is widely appreciated as an ideal starting point for exploring the deep river valleys and the rugged moorland that surrounds our home. The Ten Tors events and many other biking and walking events start in the village. The surrounding moorland is full of fantastic walking trails and hidden wild swimming spots. We've left a guidebook in the room which lists many of our favorites, alongside even more we're yet to explore. And if you're keen to escape the rugged hills for some coastal air, then the glorious surfing and sandy beaches of South Devon are around 40-50 minutes drive. Widecombe village is proud to have a fantastic village shop offering locally sourced fruit, vegetables, bread and meat reared on the moorland around our home. There is also a couple of pubs (our favourite is the Rugglestone Inn), a few other nic-nack shops and a brilliant cafe. All sat around our moorland green, with far-reaching views up to the rugged tors around us. We also have a monthly Farmer's Market and a fortnightly craft fair, all held in the village itself, in the town hall, just by the church. The Widecombe Fair is an annual event that’s been running for over 150 years by the village’s vibrant community, providing the inspiration behind the popular Devon folk song, ‘Widecombe Fair’. It's held on a Tuesday and you'll need to book a good year in advance to guarantee accommodation.
