d (1 mile water crossing from the Peru boat launch and 11.9 miles of trails) The area surrounding this historic island, now owned by the state, was the site of a pivotal naval battle during the Revolutionary War. The historic lighthouse, built in 1874, is open to the public on some Sundays during the summer. There are many beautiful views from the shoreline trail that circles the island, skirting cliffs, a heron rookery, beaches and sheltered bays. The island is a very popular camping destination for boaters on Lake Champlain in the summer. There is an abundance of poison ivy on the island; wear long pants, socks and closed toe shoes to avoid exposure. The water crossing can become dangerous when windy conditions cause the narrow channel to become very rough. Be sure to check the weather forecast before setting out and choose your day wisely.

Mount Marcy is the highest of the High Peaks, and its impressive presence commands the view from many other peaks. The shortest route to its cone-shaped summit is from the Adirondack Loj parking area. Don't be fooled by the relatively low milage of this hike — this is a steep, serious climb, especially during the last mile, which ascends the summit on open rock. 7.4 miles one way or up to 14.8 miles round trip for a moderate to steep climb.
