Love the decor of this place, which was once a speakeasy, then a country-Western bar, then a French bistro. Now it calls itself "casual Californian." Great outside deck if it's nice weather. The food is basic, the vibe is fun.

If you are an adventurous coffee drinker, you'll like the opportunity to sample pour-over coffee from around the world. The descriptions will entice you. The espresso drinks are yummy, too, as is the limited menu. It doesn't get more Berkeley PC than this place--make sure not to miss the sign at the counter about which pronoun to use for your server. It's edgy, yes, and maybe a little precious, but the coffee is indeed an alchemical delight.

Great cafe to hang out during the day and live music especially on Friday nights. The menu is Italian, and this was once part of the iconic Caffe Trieste clan. It still feels Italian, though the servers are now Latinos.

Just a few minutes away by car and you can walk along the bay or ogle all the boats in the harbor. This is our favorite place to go when we want to watch the sunset.

If you want something a little bigger than the Emeryville Marina, try this. There is a one-mile paved path all the way around, or you can head uphill on one of any number of dirt paths. Great to watch the sailboats blast in at the end of the day and then the sun setting behind the Golden Gate.

This park stretches along the hills to the east of Berkeley and Oakland and it's got everything--a "Little Farm" for kids, hiking trails, a carrousel, views. Pack a picnic lunch and spend hours up here!
