Avon has many more restaurants and a Food Lion for your bulk grocery buying needs. It is also your closet pharmacy.
Word of advice - Dirty Dicks crab house is also there but is gimmicky and the local joints have much better food.

Ocracoke is a great place for a day trip. Only way to get there is by ferry and the vehicle ferry is free and departs at the top of every hour. If planning on going get there by 0800-0900 in order to not wait to get on a ferry. (it gets pretty busy).
Full of great food (Pony Diner, Howard's Pub), surf shops, art gallery's, and lots of US history.
