Food scene

This is a fabulous restaurant just a 7 minutes walk from the property/cottage. It is considered the best restaurant in Alassio, and we are so lucky it is so easy to get to. People come from all over, including celebrities from Cannes, San Remo, etc. It is perched on the top of the neighborhood above the cottage. Wonderful food and views, great service. It is great if you don't feel like going back down the hill to Alassio after a long day at the beach! To make a reservation, it seems that you call and leave a message during high season and they call you back (you might have to call. a few times). Otherwise, during low season they answer the phone directly. They are open for lunch and dinner during low season and just for dinner Monday - Wednesday, lunch and dinner Thursday - Sunday during high season.

This is a fabulous trattoria right down the hill from the cottage in Alassio. It is the absolute favorite of the Alassio locals. The food is traditional, a lot of fish dishes, but also non-fish dishes, great atmosphere. You have to send a WhatsAp message to make a reservation., but they really pay attention to that. Extremely reasonably priced.

This is a camping/bungalow vacation spot also has a full restaurant and is just down the path from the Chapel Santa Crocie, so it's a very easy walk and it is on the way to the FREE beach. It's also a great place to stop for a drink (for just a couple of Euros more, they bring you a beautiful tray of appetizers) on your way to the beach or your way home from the beach. Good pizza. Casual friendly atmosphere.

This little gem at the very end of the fishermen shacks in the port of Alassio. Small, quaint, with freshly caught seafood. Limited menu, but totally worth it. You can even eat on the docked boats. Pierre and Anna are delightful. Very reasonably priced too. Great wine with their own brand. They are open for lunch and dinner during the week, closed Mondays, open only for apperitivi and lunch Saturday and Sunday.

High in the hill over Alassio, this is another fantastic out of the way restaurant. It is a climb up from the main road, but if you want to get out of the City, it's worth it. Although they serve pizza, they really shine with their grilled meats and other foods. The view is great, although somewhat hampered by surrounding roof tops, but it's a fun place to visit for some great spiedini and sausages etc.

Cities & Villages Not to be Missed

Alassio, the ❤️ of the city just down the hill from the cottage, is considered one of the most beautiful cities on the Riviera and borders the Mediterranean Sea. It has a pedestrian-only street (Budello) lined with stores, bars, cafés, restaurants. It is a fun, lively city with plenty of shops for vegetables, meat, bread and pastries. There are also at least 3 sizable supermarkets. The beaches of Alassio are considered the best on the Mediterranean. Alassio beaches are sand beaches-- quite rare along the Riviera. There are many FREE beaches and of course the ubiquitous private (PAID) beaches. We find the best beach to be the FREE beach at the very end of the Port of Alassio.

Laigueglia is a small traditional seaside village, similar to many towns in Liguria , just southeast of Alassio. You can walk to Laiguelia from the cottage. You take the Mule Road to Alassio and then walk west (right) along the Lungomare. It is a 26 minute walk total. It is a fun place to visit once you've explored Alassio and you can walk between the two towns, along the promenade. With its alleys and village squares, the lilac-pink tones of the houses gathered in the protective shade of the monumental church of San Matteo, Laigueglia retains the charm of an old fishing village. At the same time, however, Laigueglia has been able to become a lively town, full of typical restaurants and beach bars.

If you wish to explore a bit, I highly recommend the small city of Pieve di Teco. It is a picturesque medieval village in the province of Imperia. Walking along the covered loggias on both sides of the main streets, you feel like you've entered into ancient times. It is rather off the beaten path so you mix with the locals and some expats who purchased vacation homes in the surrounding hills. Excellent eating-- Profumo di Vino has local dishes, a constantly changing menu and is incredibly well priced (as all these recommendations are). Pieve di Teco has a name that partly recalls its history and refers to the presence of an ancient church, the one dedicated to Santa Maria della Ripa. Teco refers to the Latin term “tectum”, which means “house”, therefore referring to the inhabited center since very ancient times. The territory was inhabited since the Celts and at the time of ancient Rome, but its foundation with the current layout of the ancient village dates back to the time of the Lombards, while for the "new village" we have to wait until the 13th century. It was in this period that under the control of the feudal lord and Marquis Antonio di Clavesana , about 300 families established their homes.

Albenga, the city of a hundred towers, is not to be missed. It is a unique place where the past blends harmoniously with the modern city, in a unique territory between sea and mountains. The city overlooking the Medeterrean Sea and the Gallinara Island. There are a variety of restaurants, at least one museum, and a lot of bars and cafes. It is a very easy city to walk around in, and you can walk to Albenga along the same road old Roman road you take along the side of the Santa Croce Chapel. The walk itself is incredible, with constant sea views and you visit roman ruins as you walk. You can also drive to Albenga-- easy parking outside the City walls.

Imperia is a coastal city in the region of Liguria, Italy. It is the capital of the Province of Imperia, and historically it was capital of the Intemelia district of Liguria. Benito Mussolini created the city of Imperia on 21 October 1923 by combining Porto Maurizio and Oneglia. Imperia is a popular summer destination for visitors. It has a nice covered walkway in its main street, with decent shopping. The port is very fun, large with some very large yachts that moor there for a bit. There are some really good restaurants along the port. You just have to walk along the port and pick out where you would like to eat.

Located on a hill over the sea, Cervo is worth a visit for its lovely piazza and for the colors of its houses and for its suggestive profile. The hamlet has its original and evocative characteristics of the medieval village, characterized by antiques buildings, noble palaces, narrow alleys where you can find artisans and art shops, arches and stairways that overlook the sea, transforming into frames of that wonderful blue sea. Do not miss the concave facade, the symbol of the town, of the Church of San Giovanni Battista (XVII-XVIII century), which overlooks Corallini's Square, the beating heart of the village. Cervo is very known for the International Festival of Chamber Music, that takes place every year in July and August, where the greatest artists of Europe offer concerts under the moonlight, by exploiting the acoustic potentials of the square.

Fun things to do around Alassio

This is a must-see for any serious gardener. It is just across the valley from the property, and the best way to access it is to take a taxi, since there is no parking at all for the garden visitors. You do need to make a reservation, and you can do that on their website. Wear bug spray, they do have mosquitos due to all the ponds and fountains.

Grotto di Toriano is an extraordinary ensemble of caves. It is important both from a naturalistic and historical point of view and a great place to take your kids. There are spectacular stalactites and stalagmites and also some of the most ancient prehistorical remains from 300 000 years ago. The caves are famous for being the largest cave bear graveyard in Europe and one of the very few sites where have been found remains of Homo Heidelbergensis, an archaic relative of Homo Sapiens, and also of Neanderthals. The nearby Borgo di Toriano is also delightful. It is a small medieval borgo, very pretty and easy to walk around and have an ice cream after you visit the caves.

Molamola will take you out on boat excursions, both short and long, far and near. You can visit the Island of Gallinara, although you can't actually set foot on the Island, you can swim in its coves from the boat. You can also go whale watching. There are several boat rental/hire companies in the port of Alassio-- Molamola is maybe the largest.

Walking to the Alassio Beaches

There are several ways to walk easily to the beaches in Alassio, and you can walk to all of the beaches from any point to which you arrive. But here are some more direct ways to get to where you might want to be:
Huwag palampasin

Walking To ALL the Beaches in Alassio:

The Mulattiera (Mule Road) begins right under the church, just 50 meters from the cottage. This is the road that was built in medieval times. People would use mules to go up and down. It’s a pretty walk and it’s for pedestrians only. When you arrive in Alassio you can walk along the Lungomare and pick out which beach you’d like to use. We like Bagni Adelesia, which is almost at the end of the private beaches towards the Port. There are several FREE beaches throughout as well along the LungoMare.
Huwag palampasin

Easy Walk to the Large FREE Beach next to Port of Alassio:

Walk to Sante Croce chapel, which is a ten minute walk from the cottage. After you arrive at the Chapel, follow the road until you see the vacation bungalows and signs for the restaurant “La Vedetta.” There are a series of steps that take you down to the restaurant, you pass that, come to the main road, the Aurelia, and then cross the Aurelia to a path with a sign that says “Zero Beach.” You walk down that path and when you arrive at the Sea, you can walk to your right and access the public beach.
Huwag palampasin

Walk to a Midpoint in Alassio for All Beaches:

Alternatively, you can take a pathway that brings you more in the middle of all the beaches of Alassio. Also walking to the Chapel Santa Croce, instead you cross in front of it and walk down the narrow road. Following that, you arrive at more of a midway point in Alassio to arrive at all the beaches, including the Port and the FREE Beach.
Huwag palampasin

Driving to the Beach:

It is just a five minute drive to Alassio and the beaches. An easy drive but as you can imagine, parking can be a bit tricky right along the beaches during very high season weekends, however it is not impossible. We find the easiest parking to be in the Port or along the Lungomare, east of the main part of the City there is also parking. We surprisingly find parking in the city public parking fairly often along the children's park and the merry-go-round. Since there seems to always be parking in the Port, you would be very close to the FREE beach if you parked in the Port.
Huwag palampasin

Taking the Shuttle Bus to the Beach:

The Shuttle Bus stops right in front of the house, the bus stop is between the front of the cottage driveway and the church. It stops at 20 minutes after every hour (but can be up to 15 mins late) This takes you right into the heart of the City and from there it's just minutes walk to the beaches. The shuttle bus is very handy for those who don't want to walk back up the hill. It comes at 7 mins after every hour at the bus stop in front of the children's merry go round. You wait for it near the recycling bins right outside the gate into the park, since it has to make the turn right away.

Bring comfortable sport sandals

The Mule Road is made up of a combination of bricks, stone and some parts just earth so you need shoes fit for that type of terrain, if you think you might use the Mule Road occasionally. Sports sandals in the summer are perfect, since they are versatile also for the beach.

Bring Beach Equipment

You will need to bring your own beach towels, beach umbrellas, and water toys.

Shuttle Bus

There is an hourly bus service that stops just meters from the cottage. It takes you to all the stops along the Aurelia, and also stops in front of the train station. It travels all the way to the end of Alassio towards Laigueglia. You buy the tickets at any tabacchi (tabacco shop). Also at the Officina Cafe, which is right across from the tourist kiosk near the commune on the intersection of Via. G. Mazzini (Aurelia) and Via Gibb.

Car Service

We sometimes use a car service to get to or from the Nice airport. That contact info is listed elsewhere and in the handbook you will find in the cottage.
Paano makapaglibot

Taxis

There are plenty of taxis around in Alassio . You can hail one easily by any hotel, which are lined all along the beaches. Alternatively you can walk to the train station and always find one ready for you. It’s about a 12 Euro ride from train station to the cottage (in August 2022).

Trains

The train station of Alassio is right across from the Commune. You can take trains to all the cities of Italy for the most part. You can also take the train to and from Nice Airport.

Walking!

It is an easy walk to the main part of Alassio and you can also walk to Albenga. If you use a combination of walking and the shuttle bus (if you have weary little ones after a long day at the beach), you can really park your car and never use it until after your stay.
