Food scene

Our absolute favorite place to go when we visit the cabin, Ravenwood is a must-visit gem in Berkeley Springs. Mark and I actually went here on our first date, and the experience was one that we will not soon forget. First, the food is absolutely amazing. The proprietress (Regina) has unmatched culinary skills in all of Berkeley Springs, and once you meet her, you’ll quickly realize that she is a national treasure. The menu is limited (as the restaurant seats roughly 10 people, and is basically a one-woman show), but it never disappoints. In addition to fantastic food (and lots of wine…), Regina is an exceptionally talented musician and will sing and play guitar for all her guests in the evening (we usually try to get a reservation for around 7:30 pm). We recommend that you make reservations early, as Ravenwood is only open on Friday and Saturday evenings for dinner. Recommend making a reservation several days in advance. Mention Sleepy Bear Cabin referred you. 206 Martinsburg Rd Berkeley Springs, WV 25411 (727) 742-8333

15 Fairfax St Berkeley Springs, WV 25411 (301) 751-3305 http://fleurdelischeese.com/ If you’re in the mood for some charcuterie or good wine, you must stop by the Fleur de Lis Cheese Shop in Berkeley Springs. A small, family run business, they offer a variety of cheeses and wines to excite your palate. The hours are irregular, so be sure to check the website or call before you decide to visit. Often when we are in town, we run into Regina (the owner of Ravenwood), who buys some of her ingredients at Fleur De Lis. Needless to say, this place definitely adds to the small town charm of Berkeley Springs.

Offering both a bar/restaurant and an olive oil tasting room, there are plenty of exciting things to try at the Naked Olive. We love to cook, so we will often come here to find novel infused olive oils or balsamic vinegars to experiment with. Their must have staple is a garlic infused olive oil. Additionally, one of our favorites is a sesame infused olive oil, which is great for stir fry! As one would expect, the bar also offers a variety of dirty martinis.

If you need to satisfy your caffeine fix, the Fairfax Coffee House is our favorite coffee shop in Berkeley Springs. Not only do they have fantastic espresso (an essential for me if I am to be functional during the day…), but they offer fantastic paninis and other sandwiches to satisfy your appetite. A great place to stop for lunch (and a hit of caffeine…) while exploring the town.

If you really want to experience West Virginia, you definitely need to stop by Hillbilly Heaven. A dive bar with pool tables and electronic slot machines (in the back room), this place will definitely give you some local flavor. While they offer steak night on Fridays, we can’t speak to the food as we’ve not had a chance to sample it. Overall, this is a fun place that makes me feel nostalgic for my hillbilly roots

Distillery

315 James Burr Blvd Kearneysville, WV 25430 (681) 252-1246 We are avid bourbon drinkers, so much so that our Friday night tradition includes Manhattans on the rocks. So naturally, Devil’s Due is a must-visit place for us. Our first time here, we had a fantastic experience meeting one of the owners and the distiller. With everything from vodka to moonshine, and whiskey to bourbon, the owner told us about all the processes and the philosophy behind the distillery. In addition, the distiller gave us a tour of the facility and an interesting lesson in the art of making bourbon and whiskey. We also love that they have mini white oak barrels for purchase, and the perfect clear (unaged) whiskey to age as your own in your newly-purchased oak barrel. While Devil’s Due is currently a small, family-run operation, we are very excited to see how large it becomes.

We would be remiss if we didn’t stop by the antique mall when we are in town. I’m sure you’ll notice that we’ve decorated the cabin with many finds from this whimsical place. From Wheaton glass to mason jars, this place has everything you could want. We definitely recommend that you stop by and see what you can find.

Sightseeing

The heart of Berkeley Springs, the park not only offers a great place to picnic, but also a bath house, a spa, a museum, and a spigot where you can take home some natural spring water from Berkeley Springs. We love to stop here and pick up a gallon (or three) when we are in town. Even George Washington used to visit the bath here!

Brewery

After you explore Fairfax Street in Berkeley Springs, drive up the mountain to the Berkeley Springs Brewing Company to chill with a cold one for the rest of the afternoon. This place has a fantastic selection of beer that’s made in house. They also offer food, but we’ve not explored the menu, so we can’t speak to that. A fun, relaxing vibe that is definitely worth checking out.
