Just a short hop from Balloch Helensburgh is a very pretty and historical town that sits on the shores of the famous Clyde river. One of it,s many famous sons and residents was the inventor John Logie Baird who is widely credited as being the first person in the world to demonstrate a working television. A great day oot can be had just wandering about the town ,eating at one of it,s vast array of restaurants and visiting it,s famous buildings. Check out the Hill House in Helensburgh it is widely recognised as the most iconic home designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Scotland’s most famous architect. Commissioned in 1902 by a wealthy Glasgow-based publisher, Walter Blackie, the house was carefully designed by Mackintosh to accommodate the Blackie family and their lifestyle. Mackintosh paid just as much attention to the building’s interior spaces as to its overall architectural form. Every item of furniture, textile and decorative feature was custom made by Mackintosh and Margaret MacDonald, a well-established artist in the Arts and Crafts movement.

Dumbarton Castle (Scottish Gaelic: Dùn Breatainn, pronounced [t̪unˈpɾʲɛʰt̪ɪɲ]; Welsh: Alt Clut) has the longest recorded history of any stronghold in Scotland. It sits on a volcanic plug of basalt known as Dumbarton Rock which is 240 feet (73 m) high and overlooks the Scottish town of Dumbarton. Dumbarton Rock was formed between 330 and 340 million years ago, during the Early Carboniferous period, a time of widespread volcanic activity in the area where Glasgow is now situated; over time, the softer exterior of the volcano weathered away, leaving behind a volcanic plug of basalt. At least as far back as the Iron Age, this has been the site of a strategically important settlement, as evidenced by archaeological finds. The people that came to reside there in the era of Roman Britain were known to have traded with the Romans. However the first written record about a settlement there was in a letter that Saint Patrick wrote to King Ceretic of Alt Clut in the late 5th century.

Loch Lomond and The Trossachs. There are a wide range of activities in the area including mountain biking and walking, horse riding and pony trekking, canoeing and paddle boarding, wild swimming, shooting and fishing, and the UK’s longest zip wire is at the nearby Go Ape centre located at the David Marshall Lodge visitor centre. The Trossachs is the heart of Rob Roy MacGregor’s Scotland and it was in this area with its delightful mix of lochs, burns, hills and glens that he lived his life and where some of his more famous exploits took place. The region has a diversity of wildlife including magnificent golden eagles, osprey, peregrine falcons and red deer, which coexist with creatures like roe deer, wildcats, foxes, feral goats, badgers and red squirrels. This area is truly a natural paradise.
