Watching Dolphins at Chanonry Point! The most popular place to see dolphins is probably a good indicator of the best place to see them! That’s Chanonry Point between Fortrose and Rosemarkie on the Black Isle, approximately a 45 minute drive from Monkland. This narrow peninsula is an ideal location with views across the Moray Firth to Fort George. Dolphin activity here is influenced by tidal conditions. Dolphins at Chanonry Point can be seen at anytime (sometimes not at all!) but the best time to see them is usually on a rising tide. From around 1 hour after low tide, the tide turns and dolphins start to chase fish in. This means if you know tide times for a particular day, you can work out the best time to see them.

Beaches

Less than a 10 minute walk from Monkland Cottage and you can be on one of Nairn's stunning beaches. You can visit the central, east or west beach. If you’re brave enough take your swimsuit / wetsuit and take a dip! Sea swimming is proving to be very popular in Nairn as is Paddle boarding and Kayaking. You may also be lucky enough to see some of our bottle nose dolphins from the shore. Look out for flocks of birds circling as this can often be an indicator of dolphin activity.
