8 minute walk. Blanchette East, which opened its doors in August 2016, is the second outpost by brothers Maxime, Malik and Yannis Alary. Lovingly named after their mother, the new restaurant celebrates everything that guests have come to love about our Soho bistro but with a few distinct variations. The modern French menu incorporates more Southern French and North African influences with spices from the regions, while the décor is inspired by the Parisian Belle Époque era combined with the distinctive urban feel of East London.

10 minute walk. The original japanese canteen opened its doors in St John's Street, Islington, N1 in 1995 and was one of the first and innovative japanese restaurants to offer inexpensive and accessible canteen style dining . The success of this venture led to the first takeaway canteen which opened in Thayer Street, W1 in 1997. We now have shops throughout London serving thousands of customers daily. We cook hot fresh food daily, ingredients are locally sourced and each shop has its own independent kitchen (menu may differ dependant on kitchen facilities), this gives us total control over ingredients, recipes and quality.

11 minute walk. Moro and Morito chef proprietors, Sam & Sam Clark, opened their third restaurant, located at 195 Hackney Road, in 2016. Morito Hackney Road draws influences from Southern Spain, North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean including the island of Crete, where Head Chef Marianna Leivaditaki grew up and worked in her family’s fish restaurant. Samantha and Marianna have worked hard sourcing exceptional produce, some of which is not yet available in London. Morito has a concise offering of wines from the Mediterranean - primarily mainland Spain and Portugal - with a couple of lesser known wines from the Canary Islands.

16 minute walk. The hipster count is high, but the welcome and service are friendly, and there’s a level of professionalism here that’s missing from many East End restaurants. Head to the first floor of this East End trendsetter for the light, white restaurant and big oval bar (the Manchichi, where walk-ins can eat and good cocktails are mixed). The kitchen is capable of highs – duck confit with puy lentils and mushrooms was a stellar version – but a steady B-plus is more usual. Pricing is variable too – the generous prix fixe costs £17.50 for three good-sized courses.

Drinks & Nightlife

11 minute walk. 343 Cambridge Heath Road, E2 9RA London, +44 (0)20 7739 8362 The less intrepid Londoner may be put off by the street view of Satan’s Whiskers: it looks every bit a down-and-out dive bar. Inside though, it breaks the east London bar mould, with hip hop on the stereo, a smartly modish setting, vintage French posters on the wall and some of the best cocktails to be found in Bethnal Green’s burgeoning booze scene. But luckily, it’s more of a laid-back neighbourhood hangout than an out-of-place, high-end cocktail bar. Think not so much stuffy, more stuffed animals – there’s plenty of taxidermy pals lounging around, but it never borders on the tacky. The drinks list changes daily.
