the toll road is paid only on the way down out when you're leaving La Mesa. there's no need to stop on the way up at the toll road. Unless you want to have a snack at the first few stores. This is where on the weekend many athletes ride bikes up to La Mesa.

If you arrive by air, the Bucaramanga airport, BGA, is the closest to our cabin and the canyon. From the airport to the cabin there is 60 kilometers, 1:30 hours. The airport is on a hill, north west of the city. You will travel down to Bucaramanga, travel south past the city to then after about 20 minutes start climbing to the plateau of Mesa de Los Santos. plan accordingly. You will need a car to travel this route. Another way is to pay a private transportation. That will be very expensive.

Below the cables car to Chicamocha canyon is a downhill road that takes you half way to the bottom of the canyon. Its called vereda San Rafael. There is a small school and some families. 20, 30 years ago it was more populated. Once roads where open in mesa people start moving up the plateau. The road down is pretty steep with amazing views. I recommend this hike. One option to do this walk is to walk between condominium Chicamocha dorado to the road for cars and motorcycles that goes down to San Rafael and walk up the stairs to cable car station.
