Laurelhurst Neighborhood Restaurants

This Steak House and Bar Scene remind me of the sitcom, Cheers! Lots of my neighbors grab a seat in their bar and enjoy an excellent Happy Hour. I love their spinach salad and martinis.

WE LOVE the calzones at this popular pizza house. One calzone is good for two people or two meals. Their big screen TVs are ideal for watching the game.

People travel across town for their Thai food. Btw, it’s take-out only due to Covid. I’ve always preferred their take out on my patio rather than dining in, anyway. I recommend their Avocado Curry and Fresh Rolls(not fried).

These taco trucks are popular around town for a quick bite and for take out for larger parties. I prefer a light lunch : try shrimp tacos with a Horchata.

Shopping

This is a well planned, open-air shopping center with a QFC (grocery store), shops for clothing, gifts, outdoor gear, restaurants, Apple & Microsoft Stores and a TESLA store front. There are a lot of great restaurants here too: Joey's and BaBar are my favorites. But my preferred go-to lunch is actually any of the toasted sandwiches from the deli at QFC. There is a Summer Concert Series on 6 Wednesday evenings which is pretty awesome…walk if you can.

Sightseeing on a Budget Tips

The best way to enjoy a sunny day in Seattle is on the water. Here's an inexpensive and enjoyable tip. Take the Water Taxi from the Downtown Seattle Waterfront to West Seattle. https://kingcounty.gov/depts/transportation/water-taxi/west-seattle.aspx The water taxi ends at a Hawaiian Themed restaurant named: "Marination" which has great views and tasty bites and cocktails. Or hop on a rented Lime bike and pedal down to see the action on Alki Beach.

Check out sailboats, yachts and commercial vessels as they pass through the Ballard Locks between saltwater and freshwater. This is run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. You will also find gardens, trails, a gift shop, a Fish Ladder, the occasional summer concert and access to the sleepy Magnolia neighborhood.

Vacation Decadence

Take a sight seeing flight around Seattle or up to the San Juans for a day...it's beautiful! Kenmore Air has two sites convenient to my house: Seattle's South Lake Union and Kenmore. The take-off itself is thrilling.

$$$Ray's Boathouse is my favorite place to take visitors. It has the best views and the food is wonderful. I love their Sable Fish(aka Black Cod)! If you sit upstairs, it's casual with no reservations but you may have a wait. $$$$Downstairs is a dressier occasion with a pricier menu and RESERVATIONS recommended. The views are the great both upstairs, downstairs or from the bar.

$$$$$ The HerbFarm is located in Woodinville. This place has a known reputation for culinary excellence even after it changed owners. Much of their food is sourced from their on-site garden and available to walk-through. I've actually never been to this restaurant but my girlfriend had an Internship there and she became an amazing chef, author, forager and food consultant. RESERVATIONS required for an exquisite 9-course meal. It's recommended to call a few months in advance. I have enjoyed their more casual restaurant, (also on-site): $$$The Barking Frog. I've biked up there (16 Miles) on the Burke Gilman bike path, with my young family and enjoyed dinner or lunch on their patio.

Rent a kayak or Stand- Up Paddle Board and get on the water. From Lake Union, you can view the city and its variety of commerce and recreation, all from your small craft. Stick close to shore and stay away from the barges! Afterwards, enjoy some excellent Mexican food at Agua Verde's Restaurant.

Do you know how to row? There are several boathouses near by that may take seasoned visitors out with their team. Call to make arrangements. Lake Union Crew has been my boathouse for years. They offer a 6-week course for Learning to Row. Treat the equipment with care.

This hike is fairly close to Seattle just outside of the city of Issaquah. There are several switchbacks, plan for 2.5 hours of hiking and that's generous. Plenty of athletes are seen running on this path 2-3x in one day. There's a nice view at the top and you can often see hang gliders launching. There are two launch pads on the hike. You will need to purchase a parking pass.

Dear Road Bikers : Enjoy the 19 Mile Burke Gilman Bike path

I bought my house based on the quick access to the Burke Gilman. It’s my favorite way to get around the city, May-October. If you bring your bikes, bring a lock and store your bikes hanging from the studio's patio. It is VERY rare for someone to come into my backyard uninvited. Take precautions, bikes are a popular item for theft and …due to Covid supply chains, they are hard to replace! Or check out renting Lime ® bikes or scooters.
