If you want to get away from the coast and into some freshwater areas with great views, then Tamar Lakes is the place. There is a cafe, boat hire and it's a great place to paddle board or canoe. The lae is vast and there are two parts to it - upper and lower. The lower is the smaller and quieter of the two and also has a wonderful bird hide with regularly maintained feeders if you want to take a camera. Its a great place for a walk and a spot of lunch regardless of the weather. On a drizzly day the lower lake is well wooded and provides walkers with some shelter from the weather.

A short drive out of Bude and you can be at the Tearooms, Park in their car park, grab a coffee and a cake and then head out to the coastal path (starts right outside). About 600 yds will bring you to the cliffs where you can ejoy a spectacular Cornish coast view, watch Peregrine Falcons on the cliffs or set out on a stroll in either direction along the coastal path. Both directions will offer you the ability to return back on a circular walk and end up at the tearooms for a spot of lunch (they do great lunches) or afternoon te 9To die for and must be booked at least a day ahead of time). Whatever you choose, this part of the world is quiet, although the tearooms can be quite busy in holiday season, and breathtakingly beautiful. From the cliff path you can see Lundy Island and if you fancy a piece of quirky history - the Hawkers Hut, which sits in the cove behind the tearooms is worth a look. A great place to start and finish a walk. Be warned, the coastla path does go down into the valleys and the coves, so there is also the walk back up and you will need decent footwear - but you will earn that piece of cake!.

Beach days out

Not as busy as the main Bude beaches, but still has toilet, windsurfing (with hire available) food and drink and a small shop. The beach itself is pebbled, long and very picturesque. It features two freshwater waterfalls that cascade onto the beach itself and is one of the most beautiful coastal views around. It also has, at the right tide times, great rock pools, so there really is something for everyone here. It sits directly on the coastal path (which is stunning), so you can walk here from Bude or, alternatively, there is a payable national trust car park on site.

This is a quiet beach, off the beaten track and with some great coastal walks going to and from it. There are no facilities here, which is part of the reason it is so peaceful, but the beach itself is rocky/pebbled when the tide is in, with lovely sandy stretches when the tide is out. The best time to visit is when the tide is out so that you et the full benefit of the beach. Riddled with great rock pools, this really is a hidden gem.

A wonderful small beach, away from the crowds, just a short drive out from Bude. There is parking here, although you will need to take change as there is no internet down in the cove. The beach is small but beautiful and is a popular spot with locals. it has a mix of sand, pebble and rocks and two cafes and a pub at the back of it (we like the Kabin best). From here you can take the coastal path either towards Bude or out towards Tintagel. The walks have spectacular coastal views both ways and plenty of places to sit and enjoy them. A real gem of a beach. there are alos local facilities for beach users here, so its a great place to come for a full or half day.

A particular favourite of ours. Go either in the daytime, or in the evening to watch the sun go down - this beach is a great spot for sundowners! It is backed by a grassy bank and does have a car park, so access is easy and you can get the great view even without getting down onto the beach (if sand isn't your thing). The back of the beach is quite rocky, but there are flat areas, and if you venture further down, there are sandy areas to sit. There are no facilities here, but if you are here in the day, there is a static caravan tea shot set back from the beach, where you can enjoy good local produce. Because it is out of the way, you will find more locals here than anyone else, which is a good sign and not so many children. It is beutiful and peaceful and you can often see people arriving at the end of a nice day to have a BBQ and a few drinks over the setting sun - great place.

Food scene

A wonderful place to eat for all the family. Book it as soon as you arrive as it is a popular spot with the locals and isn't a huge place. You have a choice of dining in the main restauraunt or in individual huts - the latter is my fave. Like your own little booth with blankets, heaters, a canal view and complete privacy. There is a bell you can ring to get the waiters attention. The food is wonderful, there is something fo all on their extensive menu from small tapas dishes to the delicious paella which is a meal in itself!

Park in Bude and walk up the canal or drive and park in the free car park on site. The Weir provides great views on the canal and the surrounding countryside and has a number of walks, either coastal path or simply along the canal. The food here is great and while on busy days it can take a little while, it is a lovely place to be and so the wait is half the fun.
