New Haven Apizza original brick oven Napolitano "Tomato Pies" The Big 3

Guidebook cover photo: That is actually Sally's firebox you can see the oven is still wood-fired and ready to create magic. These are the big three, Sally's, Pepe's & Modern they are the original pizzerias that have made New Haven Apizza famous. Bar came much later but still built a beautiful brick oven. So as a local, seriously how good is the apizza? Well put it this way, when we all go out to one of the Big 3 everybody is still taking pictures of the pies just like we were tourists! lmao New Haven Apizza or "Tomato Pie" also called a "plain pie or a grandma pie" is simply made with a light semolina crust, plum tomatoes, parmesan cheese, a dash of oregano and a drizzle of olive oil. The bottom of the pie is crunchy because we use corn meal so it does not stick to the extremely hot oven. Please note that technically cheese, or specifically mozzarella cheese, is a TOPPING.
#1 The best apizza in the world. Worth the wait. Original brick oven. They now have an outside tented area. If it is your first time, eat-in to get the true experience of how the apizza comes out hot in all it's "Tomato Pie" glory.

#2 The original first apizza in the New Haven. Worth the wait. The original coal-fired brick oven from 1925, they have a unique way of making the pies and spinning them on long paddles kitchen is wide-open so you can watch. This is perhaps the most famous pizzeria in the United States. If it is your first time, eat-in to get the true experience of how the apizza comes out hot in all it's "Tomato Pie" glory. Tip: Try and go on an off night or get there before it opens because the lines can get ridiculous.

Very thin pie. Served in a trendy brew pub. Although they are not one of the original Big 3 apizza places, they are not a new place, they have been doing this for about 30 years now. Try the mashed potato, bacon and red onion pie -they invented it!

Greater New Haven Apizza traditional metal-oven Napolitano style pies

Many places outside of the Big 3 make a great apizza using the same techniques that can only be found here in the New Haven area but do so using a traditional metal-oven. These place can be more accessible and if your going to be here awhile we advise you to checkout some of these spots. New Haven Apizza or "Tomato Pie" also called a "plain pie or a grandma pie" is simply made with a light semolina crust, plum tomatoes, parmesan cheese, a dash of oregano and a drizzle of olive oil. This pizzeria can stand toe-to-toe with any of the Big 3 downtown. This place still draws a line so don't go if you are on a schedule.

This is the apizza I grew up eating and they still make a good pie. I recommend a large onion. If you want to eat-in its a classic dimly lit high booth spot.

Very close to 874Q. The last of the old school original pizzerias in what at one-time was a predominately Italian neighborhood.

Been around along time. I prefer their Sicilian pizza. Place is very clean and they are all business, family-run for generations. Good place to eat in they also have quality pasta dishes. Great stuffed breads always available in a case.

Foxen Park Soda is part of the whole New Haven Apizza experience they just naturally go together. A local company Foxen Park produces some Italian flavors that compliment the Apizza. We recommend the “original Apizza flavor” WHITE BIRCH (also come diet now) it’s sort-of famous around these parts, Gassosa a lemon soda and when I was young I used to like the Cherry pop! Foxen Park is available at any reputable pizzeria in greater New Haven.
