Somersby, the birthplace of Tennyson, was his home for the first 28 years of his life. Its just 1/4 mile from the Shepherds Hut. When you explore our immediate countryside you will understand his love of the area and the source of inspiration for much of his early, lyrical poetry. Somersby house and garden is only open to public for events. I have written the local Walking in the Footsteps of Tennyson trail guides for the AONB which are of course available to you.

Lincoln is steeped in history, visiting the Cathedral and the Castle are a must. The Cathedral is one of the countries finest and visible from miles around.
The Castle is Norman and houses a Victorian prison, often used for filming.
There are also lots of eateries, shops, cinema and theatre and other places of interest including a museum. The archives for Lincolnshire are housed here too. You can easily spend a day exploring Lincoln.

They also hold events regularly from 1940's nights to tank or air displays. An ex-RAF site many wartime buildings are still intact including the control tower.

You must visit the Kinema, fondly nicknamed as 'the flicks in the sticks' by airmen stationed nearby in WW2. And Woodhall Spa is a gem to walk round, with its woods, museum, Petwood Hotel and small independent shops and eateries. It is also of interest for the WW2 enthousiasts with its links to the Dambusters.

The visitor centre and cafe are open 7 days a week. The visitor centre is open from 10.00-3pm, the cafe from 10.00-2.30. You have wonderful views across The Wash to Norfolk, and of the Wolds in the other direction. Parking is £2,- for 2 hours or £5,- for the whole day.

Under new ownership, Stockwith Mill is now a wedding and events venue, but they recently have started opening to the general public on Fridays. They have a licensed bar, and provide various catering options from local businesses. A fabulous place to spend a summer evening, next to the water. They also do teas with great cakes on Friday afternoons.

Horncastle s our nearest market town, with a market every Thursday and Saturday. You'll find supermarkets and small family-run businesses including a deli, a couple of butchers etc. There are plenty of places to eat. It is also the antiques centre of the Wolds with people coming from miles around to pick up bargains.
Horncastle Market is held in Market Place, Horncastle, LN9 5HB every Thursday and Saturday 9am to 4pm with every second Thursday of the month being the Farmers' Market.
