Nature Reserve

There is a remarkable variety of wildlife living at Dungeness, with over 600 different types of plants: a third of all those found in Britain. It is one of the best places in Britain to find invertebrates such as moths, bees, beetles, and spiders; many of these are very rare, some found nowhere else in Britain. Dungeness is the perfect migration hotspot. Watch the sky for hundreds of swallows, swifts and martins as they gather in huge numbers in the spring and autumn as they arrive and leave country. In the spring, listen for the booming of our bitterns and the unmistakable call of the cuckoo. In the autumn, look for the bearded tits in the reedbeds as they feed of the seed heads. Dungeness also boasts wonderful sunsets. With the flat open ground and large sky it is the perfect place to be in the evening, watch the sun go down in this tranquil place and enjoy nature at a different time of day.

Town

Originally the railway terminal for the Folkestone-Boulogne Ferry and departure point for soldiers on their way to the Western Front, The Harbour Arm still embraces the town’s working fishing harbour, becoming a pivotal point in the town’s future and its historical past. Since opening in 2015, Folkestone Harbour Arm has cemented itself as a major destination on the Kent coast. Reaching into the English Channel, offering views of the White Cliffs and glimpses of France, the Harbour Arm is a unique cultural attraction; a place to meet friends, see live music and sample the goods from nearly 30 independent food and drink vendors.

The history-rich town of Hastings retains the character and charm of a Victorian seaside resort. Explore the lanes and passageways of the Old Town, lined with vintage shops, boutiques and welcoming cafés. Small independent art galleries line the streets to sell their art that is heavily influenced by the surrounding landscapes. When you're on the beach, don't miss the famous black fishing huts that line the seafront. Synonymous with the battle of 1066 between King Harold’s English and William the Conqueror’s Normans. The battle actually took place in the surrounding countryside, where now stands the town of Battle, which is well worth a day trip.

Travelling westward across Romney Marsh, the distinctive outline of Rye can be seen in the distance. It rises above the level green pastures, stretching from the sea to the far hills which formed the shoreline before the marsh was drained. Once surrounded by sea, this fortified hilltop town played an important role in the defence of the south coast of England. These days, the river no longer harbours warships and is home to the local fishing fleet. Rye has been the home and muse of many literary figures, including Henry James, Conrad Aiken, Joseph Conrad, EF Benson, HG Wells, and GK Chesterton. Lamb House, now a National Trust property, was home to Henry James then EF Benson, and was frequented by many other famous authors, including Rudyard Kipling. More recently it was the setting for the BBC adaptation of EF Benson's Mapp and Lucia.

Nestling in the heart of the Weald of Kent, Tenterden, rich in history, has largely escaped much modern development and has consequently retained its charm. It has an attractive, broad tree-lined High Street, brimming with interesting shops and tea rooms that have something for everyone. It is believed that the name Tenterden is derived from the Old English 'Tenet Waraden' which meant a clearing in the forest, belonging to the men of Thanet. Tenterden was an important wool trading centre in the 13th century and became prosperous. It is difficult to believe today that Tenterden had access to the sea at Smallhythe, since the coastline has altered so much. Using the wood from the Wealden Forest as its source of timber, Smallhythe was a centre for shipbuilding and produced wooden ships that were large for the time. In 1449 Tenterden was incorporated into the prestigious Federation of Cinque Ports, and was able to enjoy all the privilege and status which this position brought. Dating from the 12th century the the distinctive tower of the Parish Church of St Mildred can be seen from the High Street. To get an insight into the history of Tenterden pay a visit to the local museum which has exhibits spanning one thousand years. William Caxton, who pioneered printing in England is believed to have been born in Tenterden. The actress Dame Ellen Terry lived at Smallhythe.
