Ana Y Jose is a great lunch option on the Tulum beach. For a per person food and drink minimum you can get a spot and on their beach with fantastic waitstaff. They also have an amazing spa which we highly recommend.

For years we have frequented La Lunita in Akumal, which is usually very enjoyable and higher-end. For a long time, La Lunita was the only “cloth napkin” place in the area.

Amazing local cheese shop. I recommend the queso Oaxaca or Panela. Both are fresh made there.

There are many fish markets in Tulum. Look for the word “pescaderia.” Our favorite is El Camel- lo Jr., which is all the way through town on the main highway on the left (it also is a restaurant). In general, to get good fresh fish you will need to go to the pescaderia by around 2pm. During certain seasons, local prawns from the bay of Campeche are sold at the pescaderias, and they are delicious.

Frutas y Verduras Pool is located on Avenida Satélite. Their fruits and veggies are all very fresh and well selected. In the morning in front of Frutas y Verduras Pool, there are usually two stands selling “pollo recien matado,” freshly killed chicken. If you are comfortable enough with the look of things, we have found the quality of this chicken to be above and apart from American supermarket chicken.

There are numerous tortillerias in Tulum. Lately one of our favorites is Tortilleria Lulu. There are also coolers with fresh tortillas in Pools by the checkout.

Ancient Ruins

We recommend hiring a guide, as they provide invaluable context otherwise not evident to the untrained eye. We also recommend that you arrive early in the day because it can be intensely and unpleasantly hot and muggy at the ruins.

Cenotes

A Yucatan Peninsula specialty! A very special and refreshing experience, many of these fresh water swimming holes are located in the region. Some of them are underground caves with lots of fish where you can snorkel on a tour (Dos Ojos, right down the road is amazing). Others are open-air and you can swim or snorkel on your own.
