Take the yellow or green line to L’Enfant Plaza and walk across Independence Ave. The White House, Capitol Building, Washington, Lincoln, and Jefferson Memorials are the main attractions but I prefer the FDR Memorial. Reagan National Airport is one metro stop away. When arriving at Reagan, take the blue line one stop toward Franconia/Springfield to the Braddock Road metro stop and our place is about a block and a half from the metro station.

From our place, behind the parking lot (next to the metro tracks) at the corner of Earl St. and Oronoco St. there is a bike path. If you make a right toward the Braddock Rd. metro you will hit E. Braddock Rd. Make a left, go under the bridge, and the path picks up again on the right hand side of the road. The path eventually connects with the Mt. Vernon trail along the river.
Alternatively, if you make a right onto Oronoco St., take it to Union St. and make a left, this will put you on the Mt. Vernon trail. You can also take the trail to the right but it disappears in a few places through Old Town.
