City/town information

A small mountain town with deep roots in arts and culture, mining and the moutains themselves. They have many festivals throughout the year. Check out their website for more info. https://www.discoversprucepinenc.com/home In Spruce Pine, the wonders of nature are all around. From the sky above us to the rocks beneath our feet, take some time to wonder and enjoy. Pick up lunch downtown to go, and head north to the majestic Roan Mountain, just a short drive away. With a top elevation of 6,286 feet, a rare ecosystem, panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and access to the Appalachian Trail, the Roan is a true natural wonder. Spruce Pine’s mining heritage is based in the unique geology of our mountains. You can see huge books of mica in the ceiling of a former feldspar mine, and try some hands-on panning for gems, at Emerald Village and the NC Mining Museum (open June 26). Or hike to Linville Falls, off the Blue Ridge Parkway, where geologists say the Linville Falls Fault, visible from the Upper Falls, shows how the local landscape was formed. Back in Spruce Pine, be sure to stop in to Rocks and Things, for an amazing selection of minerals, crystals, gems, and more. Stay for dinner in town, and plan to stay the night—but don’t go to bed yet! Our area is home to Mayland Community College’s Bare Dark Sky Observatory, the first International Dark-Sky Association certified Star Park in the southeastern United States. Sign up in advance for a community viewing night, and join visitors from around the country to witness the majesty of the stars, planets, and Milky Way.

From their website; The original Mast General Store is in Valle Crucis, a litte over an hour drive from Bear Den. Valle Crucis, pronounced “valley crew-sis,” received its name in 1842 from an Episcopal bishop, who was looking for a location to establish a mission in the western part of North Carolina. Bishop Levi Sillman Ives reportedly saw a St. Andrew’s Cross formed by the confluence of three creeks on the valley floor, or as another report states, a cross formed by fog arose from the creeks. Either way, the isolated community became known as “the Valley of the Cross.” Due to its isolation and rugged features, Valle Crucis remained sparsely populated through much of the 1800s, but those who called this mountain valley home needed a place to trade for goods they couldn’t make themselves. Henry Taylor moved from the community of Sugar Grove, which is about five miles away, and set up a retail business in the 1850s. He took on a partner before the Civil War, and the store became known as the Taylor & Moore General Store. In 1897, Taylor sold half interest in the store to W. W. (William Wellington) Mast, a member of another pioneer family. The store was known as the Taylor and Mast General Store up until 1913, when the remaining half of the enterprise was purchased by W. W. Mast. From then on, the sign over the door has always had Mast in the name.

Sightseeing

Grandfather Mountain is a place of amazing biodiversity and scenic beauty that towers 5,946 feet above northwest North Carolina. A part of the United Nations’ Southern Appalachian Biosphere Reserve, the mountain is estimated to be 300 million years old — with certain rock formations dating back 1.2 billion years. One of the top highlights and memories of visits to Grandfather Mountain nature park is walking across the famous Mile High Swinging Bridge. Since 1952, visitors have “oohed” and “aahed” at the bridge’s 360-degree panoramic views. America’s highest suspension footbridge gives easy access to the spectacular views atop Grandfather Mountain’s Linville Peak, elevation 5,305 feet. The 228-foot suspension bridge spans an 80-foot chasm at more than one mile in elevation (hence the name!) Grandfather offers many things to do for the entire family.

From their website; Opened in June of 1987, Gem Mountain Gemstone Mine has been providing family fun for nearly 35 years. Opened with a passion for gemstones and sharing Mitchell County’s heritage and history of gem mining, Charles and Kay have dedicated their lives to providing a unique and memorable getaway for all! We are all about providing a relaxing and fun atmosphere for you and your family to enjoy our beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Our philosophy is “come as a stranger and leave as family”. We are a family-owned business that is attended by family staff – we hope that our “togetherness” atmosphere here will make you feel even more at home. Gem Mountain offers a variety of activities whether it be at our main property or at our mines! At the main property, you can find your treasures at the flume mine, have your treasures made into jewelry, and also shop around for just about anything you can think of at the general store! If you would like to take your experience “off-road,” we do offer guided mine trips to our private mines where you can dig your own!
