Sightseeing

Milford Sound is a 2 hour drive from Te Anau. You should allow at least 3 hours as there are lots of lovely scenic stops on the way. In our AirBnB guidebook (in the Villa), we have a copy of a road map which makes the best scenic stops. It's essential you cruise on Milford Sound as you can only see the entrance to the Sound from the wharf. We recommend a small boat cruise option as it's more personal. The cruise usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on which company you use.

The Te Anau Bird Sanctuary (Punanga Manu o Te Anau) is set on the shores of Lake Te Ana. It is open from dawn to dusk and can cater for guided tours if booked in advance through the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre. Entry is free, but a gold coin donation is appreciated. The park is a great family friendly place to visit, allowing you to take a peek at some of New Zealand’s special birds that are difficult to see in the wild. The rare flightless Takahē are the stars of the Bird Sanctuary and meeting these prehistoric-looking characters are a must-do for Fiordland visitors. Here you can also enjoy close up views of Kākā, beautiful native forest parrots, Kererū, New Zealand's stunning wood pigeons, and Tūī, with their distinctive white throat tufts (poi). There are always plenty of ducks and geese to see in the waterfowl enclosure, including introduced Mallard Ducks and Canadian Geese. The birds held in aviaries here have either been injured and cannot survive in the wild, or they have been involved in captive rearing programmes. The injured birds are rehabilitated and if possible, released back into the wild when they are strong enough. There are daily feeding time tours at 10:30 am. To join a tour you must purchase a ticket from the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre. Tours are limited to 25 people. Adult (18+ years): $10 per person Child (17 years and under): free but booking still required – children must be accompanied by an adult guardian.

The first 19km from Te Anau to Balloon Loop and 6km of trail from Manapouri to Supply Bay Road are now open for walkers, runners, cyclists and any other non-motorised transport (e-bikes welcome). The trail is pet friendly as well. The trail is mostly 2.2-2.5m wide and is rated “Grade 2 Easy”. The total length to Manapouri is 32 km. A 41km loop can be created by gravel roads up Mt York Road and along Ramparts Road, past the lookout, returning to town via the Te Anau-Mossburn Highway (see map). Construction work is underway to extend the trail to Te Anau Downs (up the Milford Road) Bikes are available for hire from Wild Rides (in the town centre). Also, transport can be arranged to Manapouri (and back). The trail has been constructed by a charitable trust funded entirely by donations.

Offer movies from box office daily as well as the following films made right here in Fiordland by helicopter pilot, Kim Hollows, who had to build the cinema to show Ata Whenua. Ata Whenua Ata Whenua is a 30 minute movie shown at Fiordland Cinema 5.00 pm and 6.00 pm daily. Ata Whenua (Shadowland) brings you the Fiordland World Heritage Status wilderness you would otherwise never see. Mysterious, evocative, exhilarating and utterly spectacular, filmed mostly from a helicopter across extremes of season, climate and terrain, it will take you on an unforgettable journey through one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes on earth. Cost - $12.00 per adult and $6.00 per child (they do have family rates as well). Great big seats and you can take a drink from the bar, coffee/tea/hot chocolate etc in with you. Deer Wars This is a story of men and machines, of incredible daring and unprecedented ingenuity set in the dangerous and unpredictable New Zealand mountains. Over a 20 year period these helicopter pioneers turned a national ecological disaster into a major export industry – but at a cost. Over 80 men died in the pursuit of deer and many more seriously injured. This film celebrates this unique time when through innovation and sheer guts a few hundred Kiwis did the impossible and created the legend that became the deer wars. This 30 minute film screens 4.00 pm daily at the Fiordland Cinema. Pricing and drink options are the same as for Ata Whenua.
