The site possesses several pyramids dating to the Late Preclassic period (500 BC – AD 250) and the Classic period (AD 250–900). This ruin is part of the Chalchuapa archaeological zone and displays influences from the Olmecs and from Teotihuacan. It is closely related to the ruins of Tazumal and San Andrés.

In the lake’s southwest corner is Teopán Island, once a sacred site for the ancient Maya. Farther southwest, the Cerro Verde National Park is crossed by a network of trails. Its towering Santa Ana Volcano and the conical Izalco Volcano offer panoramic views over the lake. Local restaurants are found around for low budget and upscale restaurants are located at the lake front or in hotels.
