Columbus Landing Site, a National Historic Landmark that is the only known site where members of a Columbus expedition set foot on what is now United States territory. The site is marked by Fort Salé, a remaining earthworks fortification from the French period of occupation, about 1617. The park also preserves prehistoric and colonial-era archeological sites including the only existing example of a ball court in the US Virgin Islands.

Beach and restaurant. You can bring your own chairs or rent them on-site. Rainbow Beach is located on the west end of St. Croix. There is plenty of parking available and a restaurant/bar where you can order food and drinks. There is usually live music, and a volleyball net set up on the beach for players. This is the Sunday hang out spot on St. Croix, otherwise referred to as ‘Sunday Funday’. The water is typically calm, so this is a good spot for snorkeling, and paddle boarding, and there are jet ski rentals located here.

This is a great adventure and fairly easy drive in your rental car. While you are here on St. Croix, I recommend that you take the very scenic drive all the way up to Point Udall at the far East End of the St. island – as far as you can go. Point Udall offers stunning panoramic sea views, and is the easternmost point of the United States. Home to the Millennium Monument, this tranquil point is must on any St. Croix ‘to do’ list. As you drive the winding road that leads to Point Udall, you will see that the arid climate on the East End of St. Croix hosts a variety of cactus and desert-like foliage in stark contrast to the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. You can look up towards the south and see Goat Hill rising above the road, and you can look out across the Caribbean Sea to Buck Island to the north. As you reach Point Udall, named for former Secretary of the Interior, Stuart Udall, the Millennium Monument comes into view right in front of you. The Millennium Monument was designed by Bill Rich and erected in 2000 to commemorate the beginning of a new millennium for the United States. The monument is a giant sundial which is fitting since Point Udall is the first place the sun rises on U.S. soil. In fact, special ceremonies were held at Point Udall as the sun rose on the most easternmost of American soils in the western hemisphere on the first day of the new millennium, January 1, 2000. There is a huge sign denoting Point Udall on the retaining wall at the base of the monument that makes for a great photo op, so don’t miss it!

Great walking tour. A little shopping, places to stop for food and ocean views, If staying for dinner, I highly recommend you make a reservation for dinner while you are there. Frederiksted, located on the west end of St. Croix, has a long and storied history. The town was established in 1751 and it is the second largest town on St. Croix. It was originally protected by Fort Frederik, which dates back to 1700. Today, the fort houses a museum. Frederiksted is often referred to by locals as "Freedom City" because it and the fort is the site where then Governor General Peter Van Scholten read the proclamation abolishing slavery in 1848. A visit to Frederiksted will allow you to see several historic buildings including, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, which was built in the 1840s, along with its primary school, the Customs House, the 19th Century Apothecary, as well as many other historic buildings. Unfortunately, many of these have fallen into ruins due to several major hurricanes and the passing of time. The Frederiksted of today has a newly renovated and colorful waterfront that draws cruise ships and visitors from all around the world. When a ship is in port, the town literally comes alive with arts and crafts vendors, local food and drink vendors, live music, dancing Mocko Jumbies and many happy tourists enjoying their visit to the island. The town was destroyed by fire in 1878 as a result of a labor revolt. Arson was the cause of the fire which was used as a means of revolt. The revolt was led by four Crucian female laborers. The town was later restored during the Victorian era, which is why it now has such lovely "gingerbread" Victorian architecture. The town retains its original seven street by seven street city design.
