Ruthin is a small historic market town in Denbighshire, North Wales, overlooking the River Clwyd in the beautiful Vale of Clwyd. Ruthin has a long, exciting and interesting history spanning over 700 years including scandal, battle and siege. Today it is the administrative centre of Denbighshire. The original name of Ruthin was ‘Castell Coch yng Ngwern-fôr’ (red castle in the sea-swamps). Established on 25 February 1859, Bangor on Dee is a left handed jumps racecourse set in glorious countryside and overlooked by the Welsh hills. Bangor has a unique character, amplified by the fact that it is the only racecourse in the country that doesn’t have a grandstand! The first steeplechase meeting took place at Bangor on 25th February 1859 over much the same course as that on which the races are held today.

The ancient city is a truly breathtaking experience. Each chapter of Chester's history is etched into the very fabric of the city. Well, you are walking where Roman Legionaires marched to war, Viking raiders wreaked havoc and Norman invaders conquered Anglo Saxons. Chester has the most complete city walls, the oldest racecourse and the largest Roman Amphitheatre in Britain, plus a 1000 year old Cathedral with Europe's finest example of medieval carvings - and of course the one and only 700 year old Rows galleries where shopping is a double delight.

Dating back to the mid 17th century and probably much earlier this beautiful riverside inn has been welcoming and refreshing locals and passers-by for centuries. A nod nostalgically to the past

A circular pub walk from the Cross Foxes in Erbistock, near Wrexham. The Cross Foxes is a wonderful pub sitting high on the banks overlooking the River Dee. The walking route heads east over pastures and through woodland to reach the nearby village of Overton, before returning along the banks of the beautiful River Dee. A lovely walk with chance to explore the classic farmland of this part of North Wales, plus the picturesque, peaceful, meandering River Dee. The walk follows a mixture of field and woodland paths alongside the River Dee, all of which can get very muddy so good waterproof boots are a must (along with a change of shoes for the pub!). If the River Dee is in flood (after periods of heavy rain) some of the paths can be flooded so do not attempt the walk at these times. There are several climbs and descents throughout and you will need to negotiate several gates plus seven stiles. Beware that many of the fields will likely be holding dairy cattle and they may show some aggression towards a dog. Approximate time 2.5 to 3 hours.
