Our nearest town (less than 5km away) with shops, restaurants and bars and the local intermarche. Guemene is a historic town, with the remains of the old town walls, and half timbered buildings. It is famous for Andouille (an acquired taste!) with an annual festival to celebrate this local sausage, plus many other events during the summer months.

La Base, Lorient, is well worth a visit. There you will find not only a submarine you can visit (and the unimaginably imposing submarine pens), an interactive sailing discovery centre, some of the round the world race catamarins, bars, cafes and a zipwire experience over the water. Lorient itself is also a modern bustling city, built round an inland port, plus the beautiful beaches at larmor plage are only a few minutes away, making this area a wonderful day out.

Port Louis is a small town with many aspects to explore. For history lovers, there is the imposing citadel and museum to visit; for culture lovers there is a bustling saturday market in the small streets of the town; for beach lovers there is a spectacular beach, hidden and protected by the defensive walls. And once you've explored Port Louis, you can take a boat to the centre of Lorient across the estuary.

Ruined abbey on the banks of the canal with art exhibitions and a famous son et lumière - worth a visit in its own right, but especially on sundays with the bustle of the Sunday market and canal side cafes. Also the starting point of our favourite walk up the gorge and round through the standing stones- the views are incredible. The abbey is also a good starting point to explore the lac de Guerlédan.

So peaceful - go for a walk along the canal, hire a canoe or an electric boat or just soak up the sun in one of the canal side cafes. A stroll along the canal takes you to st Gildas - an amazing chapel built into the rock - well worth seeing.
