A .3 mile loop perfect for a morning walk and suitable for small children. Step outside our front door and cross the street to a path that leads across the creek. This path leads to the old Appalachian Trail (red blazes). If you take a left on the old AT and walk for 10 minutes or so you’ll come to the Shamokin Springs Nature Preserve Loop sign (yellow blazes) on your left. The nature trail is an easy wooded loop that crosses over small bridges back and forth over Stony Creek.

It's a short walk from the cabin to a trailhead for Shamokin Falls. The Falls is on the Wintergreen Resort property and is a really nice but more challenging and rocky hike from this access point (not recommended for very young children). Cross the creek in front of the cabin, then turn right on the old Appalachian Trail and walk for a few minutes until you see the trailhead for Shamokin Falls on your right. Shamokin Falls is one of the most popular spots on Wintergreen so it can get crowded during peak hiking times. There is also an easier way to access it by parking and then hiking less than a mile to reach. This is perfect for a morning hike before hitting the breweries or orchards in the afternoon.

A fairly flat very nice hike from the cabin to a pretty overlook. Turn right on the old Appalachian Trail until you reach the current Appalachian Trail (near the Dripping Rock stop on the Blue Ridge Parkway/white blazes) and go left on the AT. You’ll pass some pretty rock outcroppings and reach Cedar Cliffs overlook (approximately a 30 minute walk from our house).

This is a much longer but fantastic hike accessible from the cabin without driving. Go right on the current AT and you'll be on your way to Humpback Rocks. This is an all day hike!

Breweries, Wineries & Food

A favorite go-to restaurant and hang out, right at the base of the mountain (approximately 18 minutes from the cabin). They can get busy so you may need a reservation. They have an outdoor bar, firepits, cornhole, stage for live shows, etc. If you are not a beer drinker, the Orange Smash is like an Orange Crush for adults. Lots of room for kids to run around outside. Sit down eating is often restricted to inside, with drinks and cocktails outdoors.

A lovely winery and restaurant with excellent wines and views. You can bring a picnic to the wine tasting area during the day, or have an upscale dinner at The Farmhouse at Veritas (no kids, reservations required). They usually have charcuterie boards large enough for an outdoor lunch on the picnic tables.

Perfect for an outdoor glass of wine! The outdoor seating area is very exposed, so bring a jacket, sunglasses, etc. This one can get very crowded on weekends, but it can accommodate a lot of people. There is an informal/to go style menu of boutique pizzas and light food options.

Ideal for a drive down the parkway, checking out some overlooks, and then stopping for a glass of wine. Seating is mostly outdoor on large decks with beautiful views, plenty of space for kids to run around, and there are swings large enough for an adult to swing. Food is mostly limited to prepackaged snack packs and charcuterie. NOTE: It can be easy to miss the turn off for the road to the winery.

This one is all about the outdoor space - grab your drink and head outside, down to the river (you can't see it from the road). There's so much room for kids to run around and usually yard games in the daytime and often a bonfire at night. Food trucks are the food option at Brewing Tree.

Activities

This is the pool we recommend; it's a heated pool right on top of the mountain and just about a mile or so from the cabin. The pool pass is the house manual at the cabin and guests can use it for free from 2 pm - 6 pm every day.

If it's not too hot, this is such a nice place to pick berries and get local produce, jam and honey. It's right across the road from Blue Mountain Brewery so you can combine the trip. And make sure to get some ice cream before you leave, we especially love the strawberry!

The lake is surprisingly warm (warmer than Sherando Lake) and kids love the water trampoline, slide, water bike and kayaks. It's really nice to hang out on the beach on a hot day, but bring towels because chairs are limited this year (they removed a lot of the beach chairs due to Covid). There is a charge to use it so check the Wintergreen site for hours and fees.

27 holes against lovely mountain backdrops; we love playing at Stoney Creek. This course is public and hosts a golf academy that offers lessons and clinics frequently. It's usually about 10 degrees warmer down at Stoney Creek than it is on top of the mountain, and it takes a little less than 20 minutes to get there from the cabin.

On Sundays in the summer the Roseland Polo Club has matches at the vineyard - bring a camp chair and picnic, buy a bottle of wine, and enjoy the match for free. There is no shade, but if we know ahead of time we can usually leave a pop up tent for you to borrow. The winery is about 45 minutes from the cabin. Food trucks are usually on site. Check their website for details on the match each week.
