A slice of medieval history delivered slap bang in a moat filled with huge koi carp. A great view from the top of the towers shows exactly why it was built where it was. Definitely worth considering taking the steam train from Tenterden to Bodiam to make a day of it.

A slice of medieval history delivered slap bang in a moat filled with huge koi carp. A great view from the top of the towers shows exactly why it was built where it was. Definitely worth considering taking the steam train from Tenterden to Bodiam to make a day of it.
We enjoyed discovering this mixture of very old and just plain old properties, with an ancient moated castle at the base of the hill and a slightly more modern mansion at the top. Lovely grounds surround the properties with tulip trees, lakes and a small woodland playground for the little ones.

Scotney Castle - National Trust
We enjoyed discovering this mixture of very old and just plain old properties, with an ancient moated castle at the base of the hill and a slightly more modern mansion at the top. Lovely grounds surround the properties with tulip trees, lakes and a small woodland playground for the little ones.
Famed for its beautiful gardens, it's just a short drive from Benenden and well worth a visit for those that love their horticulture, as we do. Based around a more natural style of planting that Sissinghurst, it's also worth watching out for their lecture and education series.

Immerse yourself in the history of 1066, with the chance to see the actual battlefield complete with its carved wooden statues detailing specific moments from the Battle of Hastings - we learned it was definitely not a cut and dried victory for the Normans! There's a really good visitors centre and they run activities for children at certain times, such as learning how to use a sword and shield. Good fun.

A classic moated castle packed with history. There's a great treasure hunt through the main house that children will definitely enjoy completing, plus a packed adventure playground. They also hold events here - we went to an outdoor screening of Top Gun here a few years back!

Literally just down the road, it offers one of the best annual displays of bluebells in the country within its grounds in the springtime. Worth watching out for live music events, as well as trade shows such as the Wealden Times fairs in midsummer and Christmas.
