Set on a high rock above the River Tees, Barnard Castle takes its name from its 12th century founder, Bernard de Balliol. It was later developed by the Beauchamp family and then passed into the hands of Richard III.
With fantastic views over the Tees Gorge this fortress sits on the fringe of an attractive working market town also known as ‘Barney’ so there is plenty to do for families on a day out. Try and spot Richard's boar emblem carved above a window in the inner ward or visit the 'sensory garden' of scented plants and tactile objects.

The Witham is a community venue for theatre, music, art and social events, reliant on your support. Governed by a board of trustees, our facilities range from the architecturally award-winning café bar to a fully-renovated Victorian music hall and a renovated Georgian Building which was formerly a Dispensary and a Mechanics’ Institute.
We have a gallery and a box office. Our gift shop doubles as a Visitor Information Point for the area. Fast, free wifi is available throughout. Parking is plentiful.

Explore the park and amble around the ponds to spot plenty of wildlife that inhabit this remarkable setting. We have 5 acres of traditional 18th century ornamental Walled Gardens which include fabulous yew hedges, a fig house, rose garden, trees, plants and ornamental features. If you’re feeling energetic, we also have a Woodland Adventure Playground for children and offer bike hire to explore the grounds and experience the spectacular views.
