Tranquil Lake Ohrid is ringed by mountains, attractive villages and beaches which come alive in summer with local people sunbathing and swimming in the crystal-clear waters. A balmy, Mediterranean climate and some of the lowest prices in Europe make this a viable alternative to the Italian lakes.

Visited by pilgrims and travellers alike, this eastern orthodox monastery is one of the few with locational and architectural splendour. Overlooking the Lake of Ohrid, the walls provide breathtaking panoramic views of the entire Bay Area. With serene surroundings, picturesque scenery and religious history, the Monastery of St. Naum (also known as Manastir Sveti Naum) sets the prevailing archetype that runs through the entire country of Macedonia – this is truly a land where wonders of nature blend perfectly with some of the most captivating monuments of religion. Take a 1.5-hour boat ride across the lake to the monastery established by St Naum. There, surrounded by incense and choral music, put your ear to the saint’s tomb – they say you can still hear his heartbeat.

The Bay of Bones is a bay in Ohrid Lake and an archaeological site of prehistoric pile-dwelling on the peninsula and the Gradiste auto camp, near the city of Ohrid. It is 3 to 5 meters deep. The place is called "Ploca Mikov Grad". Today there is a reconstruction of pile dwellings (Water Museum "Bay of the Bones") and platforms, with its own visitors centre. Above it is the renewed Roman fortification (castrum) with military facilities of that time. The surrounding settlements were cities made on platforms, which stood on wooden piles stuck at the bottom of the lake. On those pile platforms were the houses of prehistoric people, that were connected to the shore by a movable bridge. The inhabitants of these settlements dealt mostly with fishing, but also with agriculture and hunting. This is indicated by the various vessels and items of ceramics and stone found in, both on the ground and underwater.

The number of churches in Ohrid has earned it the nickname “the Macedonian Jerusalem”: the 13th-century church of Sveti Jovan on the cliffs at Kaneo is a popular spot for watching the sun set. On sunny days join the sunbathers at the Kadmo, Cuba Libre or Bella Vista beach clubs, where you can hire sun loungers or enjoy a waterside cocktail.

The most peaceful outlook over Lake Ohrid, this beautiful Byzantine (Eastern Orthodox) church is perched up on the hill in Old City Park with magical views. Ohrid is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so the church is also protected by UNESCO. The church is a replica of the old church of St. Panteleimon, built by St. Clement of Ohrid in 863, demolished by the Ottomans. The construction of the present church was completed in 2002. Archaeologists have come to believe that the church is located on the site where the first students of the Glagolitic alphabet (used to translate the Bible into Old Church Slavonic) were taught. Only a short 10-minute walk from the old city, up a small hill, easily accessible for everyone to visit. A small fee to enter, local guides are available for a donation to soak up the knowledge of Ohrid and the history of the attraction. There is also a mosque on the site and a university being built. It is very calming and well maintained, and a perfect place to sit, relax and enjoy the view. You can also enter the church and there is a small gift shop inside to purchase souvenirs. Best add the old ancient theatre and Samuel's Fortress to your walking tour, as they are all 10 minutes from each other, and all have the most wonderful views of Ohrid and full of rich history.

Old Bazaar Street The Ohrid Bazaar is the most lively part of Ohrid. It starts with the farmer’s market and a small square and ends at the main port. A 1000-year-old tree still stands in the middle of the square. You can see the time from the Clock tower that stands above the square. Overlooking the square is the Mezokastro neighbourhood, which takes in name from Latin, meaning (military) camp (castrum) between city walls.
