Day Trips from Murphy

Your getaway story awaits with abundant outdoor activities within a short drive, including LOTS of area hiking and waterfalls; boating, fishing & canoeing on Lake Hiwassee, Lake Nottley and Lake Chatuge; white water rafting at the Nantahala and Ocoee Rivers; ziplining in Blue Ridge & Helen; kayaking, mountain biking at Piney Knob, Hanging Dog, Jack Rabbit and Brush Creek. Helen GA is an Alpine town situated in the mountains. So many Bavarian themed shops! They are famous for festivals and river tubing in Helen. Little girls will LOVE the famous Babyland Hospital in Cleveland, GA. It is quite the treat for them to see how Cabbage Patch dolls are 'born' and you can tour the place and purchase one-of-a-kind specialty dolls. Nearby horseback riding, rodeo watching in Hiwassee, gem mining in Franklin and other towns, festivals, numerous mountain wineries & breweries. Do you love trains? Take an actual train ride in Bryson City or Blue Ridge. We've done both several times, both with and without children. Lots of fun to do at different times of the year. Specialty events abound in November and December with Polar Express themed train excursions...so much fun! But get your tickets early, these sell out early! You can even explore caves in Sweetwater TN or ride a tram down a mountainside in Chattanooga TN. More information and direct links can be found on our main website as well as on our social media pages.

Interested in going FAST? Downtown Murphy is home to the Appalachian Driving Experience where you can zoom a late model Porsche through the Appalachian Mountains or just take a nice drive along one of the many roads with scenic overlooks and waterfall stop offs. The area is legendary in the nation for the Tail of the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway, popular motorcycle routes.

Blue Ridge is just 25 minutes from the cabin. We have ziplined, enjoyed food festivals, mountain wineries, breweries and restaurants in the downtown area, plus you can't miss Three Sisters Fudge and THE TRAIN!! Do you love trains? Take an actual train ride in Blue Ridge. We've done both several times, both with and without children. Lots of fun to do at different times of the year. Specialty events abound in November and December with themed train excursions...so much fun! But get your tickets EARLY, these sell out! The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway follows the former Marietta and North Georgia Railroad line along the Toccoa River north to McCaysville, Georgia, and its Twin city of Copperhill, Tennessee. Trains generally run Fridays to Mondays from late March to the last weekend in December, daily (except Wednesdays) during spring break (first full week of April), and summer (mid-June to the end of July), and from October until Thanksgiving. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad is located in downtown Bryson City. It should definitely be on your MUST DO list. The train offers various lengths and themed events such as Polar Express. In the summer you may catch a glimpse of Bigfoot as you amble by. :) Fly fishing abounds here and the Tuckasegee River is popular for white-water rafting. Downtown has plenty of shops, souvenirs, eateries, and breweries. Nice place to walk around.

Our favorite places to shop in Blairsville are the Picker's Barn and Alexander's. Lots of unique things to be had. The downtown area is super cute, filled with eateries and shops, and a central courthouse just like you think of with historic towns. Blairsville however is known for its abundance of hiking and fishing, waterfall watching, and overall nature friendly atmosphere. Our cabin is located equal distance between the downtown areas of Blairsville, GA and Murphy NC.
