Local Beaches

Sandymouth Bay Beach A gorgeous National Trust beach, just 20 minute from Little Acorn and Southcott Bungalow (by car). When the tide is out, the fantastic sandy beach is exposed and it is often much quieter than the other main beaches of Bude. Popular with both families and surfers and is set against a dramatic back-drop of sheer cliffs. The beach is just a short walk down from the National Trust car park, where you will also find toilets and a café with seasonal opening times. At low tide you can walk the 2 miles from Sandymouth Beach to Crooklets along the beach; you may see a shipwreck buried in the sand and look out for the honeycomb structures of the sandcastle worm. The car park is chargeable and manned by the National Trust. Out of season there is an honesty box for parking payments. Swimming is only safe between the red and yellow flags.

The town is home to the wonderful, picturesque Okehampton Castle, which dates back to the Domesday Book and sits in an elevated position above beautiful woodland walks where the West Okement River runs. It is the remains of the largest castle in Devon, nestled on a wooded spur above the rushing River Okement. The Castle was first started just after the Norman Conquest, with a moat, as a Motte and Bailey castle with a stone keep. It was converted into a sumptuous residence in the 14th century by Hugh Courtenay, Earl of Devon, much of whose work survives. After the last Courtenay owner fell foul of Henry VIII in 1539, the castle declined into a ruin. There is a riverside picnic area and beautiful woodland walks nearby. It's also a great place for bird lovers with regular visiting species and in spring and early summer you can enjoy a variety of seasonal wildflowers, which adorn the meadow, woodland and motte.
