Food Scene

Walking distance (less than 10 min), great food, local cuisine, reasonably priced. The vegetarian plate is my favorite, three choices + cornbread for $12. Other favorites are shrimp po-boys and roasted chicken, and we have never gone wrong with the daily chefs specials. And if you don't like the look of the menu, or if the are closing (9pm), you can right next door to Wayfare, which also has a great menu and is open a little later, or go for a pizza at Ancora.

We love their fried oysters (usually get them as a side order so there is less of the other stuff which is very heavy, french fries etc), and they serve beer in huge, chilled glasses. And it's a very pleasant 10 minute walk straight up Marengo to St.Charles. During Mardi Gras they have tables at the open windows so you can watch the daytime parades roll by while eating a sandwich.

Very local, small restaurant, open very early every day, that serves a cooked breakfast, donuts, good gumbo, po-boys, and daily lunch plate specials, all very inexpensive. If you have a hankering, and ask nicely, you can get a cappuccino across the street at Mojo's and bring it in as they don't make espresso coffee.

A sweet little restaurant serving lunch and dinner as well as Sunday brunch, with occasional music. Look for the giant iron skillet on the outside wall. It is on the far end of Louisiana Avenue between Magazine and Tchoupitoulas, so you can take a pleasant stroll on Magazine Street on a Sunday after brunch, if it's not too hot out.

This restaurant is in a great old renovated building, and lovingly decorated in Mexican style. The food is very good, Mexico City Food Truck style, and they often have very good live music, check the listings. One of the owners is the founder of our premier recycling center, the Green Project.

Sake Cafe Uptown is easy to get to by bike, and is located on trendy Magazine Street. They have a happy hour every day until 6pm, call them first to be sure! It's a beautiful restaurant inside, but I like to sit on the porch in the early evening, sipping wine and watching the world go by as I enjoy tasty, inexpensive sushi.

For those who are craving a French pastry, this is the closest and best place to get one. It's an easy bike ride, they are open every day from 6am (7am on Sundays), and they also serve coffee and tea, plus they have very good bread (although in my opinion the bread from nearby Whole Foods is better).

Drinks & Nightlife

It's a small, friendly club with a variety of live music, some of which I enjoy, and some of the Indie variety that attracts a large group of young people dressed in black. It's in the neighborhood so I can walk there. The posters in the front window have some of the funniest band names I have ever seen, and most of the bands I have not heard of, but I like the atmosphere and decor.

Large barn-like music venue at the end of Napoleon Avenue across from Rouses. There is a statue of Professor Longhair outside. There is no seating so it's best if you are dancing. My favorite club on Frenchmen Street, always good music, yummy cocktails (try the Muse) and tasty food (if a bit pricey). If it's too crowded there are many other choices of music venues and restaurants on Frenchmen Street. About ten minutes by car if you take Hwy 10 to the Claiborne exit and then turn right on Elysian Fields. It's usually not so difficult to find a parking spot, just continue on Elysian Fields past St. Claude Avenue and turn right on Royal or Decatur. There is also an art market, and there are street bands. It can be very crowded these days, so the early days of the week are good choices for going there. Music starts early and ends late on Frenchmen St, check the listings.
