Belgian beer

Best place to try Belgian beer. They have more than 200 different beers in their menu, some of them really exclusive, and Joël knows everything about them. He can also recommend the best beer according to your taste. The place is unique, in the cellar of a church, with great music and cozy atmosphere. If you're visiting this place, don't miss the Dulle Teve (Mad Bitch), a blond beer that you cannot find anywhere else in the city. Open every day from 17h00.

One of the postcards of the city. There you can also see where the 3rd meridian crosses the city. Make sure you don't EVER eet or drink around the market because normally they charge you huge touristic prices for not so good food.

Nice historical building. They have more than 20 bells that play music each hour. If the weather is good, you can have the most astonishing view from up the tower... however, you'll have to wait looooong hours till you get to climb it, with no lift, all the 366 stairs. For the price (€12,00/person) we don't recommend to climb it. Make sure to read the history on the walls though, and to visit the lace shops behind the building. Open every day from 9:30 till 18:00.

If you chose for renting a bike, we'd recommend you to ride around the old center at the 'vesten'. It's a green area along the canal where you can see the windmills, parks, swans and ducks, sometimes even rabbits. =)

Also by bike you can visit Damme, a small beautiful city in the neighbourhood. There's also an option of going by boat, but the view by bike is really nice. Damme has the shape of a star (you can see this if you choose for a trip in an air baloon) and nice cozy restaurants. That's an option for those who prefer relaxing idyllic spots.

You'll only need the bus to/from the station

The old centrum of Bruges is really small and you can do everything on foot. If you're coming by car you'll have a big problem finding a place to park and when you do find it, it will be expensive (€3.00/hour). There are some places where you can rent a bike, but it's also not necessary. Again: best way to explore the city is on foot.

When visiting a church...

You can visit all the churches in Bruges for free, but you can only go inside till 16:30. Plan the visits during the morning and make sure not to use flash when taking pictures and to be silent or they will not so gently ask you to leave.

Shoes and money

Avoid high heels! The streets and sidewalks are made of stones, you should better wear comfortable shoes to walk around in the city. For such a touristic city, the ATMs are not so easy to find and in some places you can only pay cash. Make sure you ask first in a restaurant or attraction. We'd recommend to have always enough cash money with you.

Drugs - Smoking - Alcohol

Even if we're so close tho The Nederlands, it's not allowed to use drugs in Belgium. Smoking is allowed in open spaces and terraces. There's a beer culture in Belgium so don't be surprised if you see old ladies having their beers at 8am. Just watch out with the alcohol graduation, that normally is really high. You can easily find beers with 11°~12°. DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE! You can go to jail for this. You can still drive if you had one regular beer (5°) or a small glass of wine. And yes, people don't drink on the streets, just in bars, cafés or terraces.
