It was built on the Dniester Pass on the site of older fortifications. In 1499, at the command of Stephen the Great, a square wooden fortress is erected. Between 1543-1546, during the reign of Petru Rares, the fortress is inhabited from stone foundation, as we see it today. The fortress is the only medieval monument in Moldova, which has been preserved as it was designed by the master, and in the bastion at the entrance there is a small military church. You can also visit the monument "Candle of Gratitude" (raised on the rock, above the Dniester, is one of the most important buildings in the modern history of Moldova) and the Cosăuţi monastery.
