Cartagena is a port city on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. By the sea is the walled Old Town, founded in the 16th century, with squares, cobblestone streets and colorful colonial buildings. With a tropical climate, the city is also a popular beach destination. Reachable by boat are Isla de Barú, with white-sand beaches and palm trees, and the Islas del Rosario, known for their coral reefs.

Playa La Boquilla takes its name from a working fishing village, located some distance further up the coast. In contrast, the actual beach area is fronted by hundreds of high-end condominiums and is one of the most popular vacation spots among the young, wealthy crowd from as far away as Medellin, Bogota and Cali. Situated at the north end of the city, 20 minutes from the old fort, Playa La Boquilla is well-known for having excellent wind conditions for related sports such as wind and kite surfing. Additionally, there is a large tourism industry in fishing, diving and jet-skiing. With three kilometres of beachfront, La Boquita commonly hosts huge beach parties, weddings and sporting events such as football or volleyball and yet, if you don’t mind walking up the coast a bit, there are tons of spaces available to relax in peace.
